VortexBox

Last Update: 2018-03-24 02:03 UTC

VortexBox is a Fedora-based Linux distribution that turns an unused computer into an easy-to-use music server or jukebox. Once VortexBox has been loaded it will automatically rip CDs to FLAC and MP3 files, ID3-tag the files, and download the cover art. VortexBox will then serve the files to network media player. The file can also be streamed to a Windows or Mac OS X system.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

In theory it's pretty good as it does indeed do what it says on the tin.

BUT: The software is now out of date - v2.4 is over 3 years old now. I run v2.3 on a old 32bit PC and it's not easy to use. When I had a Windows XP pc the VB was easy to see on the Network - now with a Windows 7 Pro PC, I can't access the files I've ripped easily either by Windows Explorer or FTP.

The vortexbox.org forum crashed some time back and although it has come back to life, none of the old forum was restored - so all that useful info has pretty much gone (though it can be searched on via the WayBack Machine).

It's also difficult to manage the ripped files - because if the software cannot recognise the CD, you end up with a load of folders called "Unknown" and tracks called Track 1, Track 2 etc, and unless you play those tracks, you have no idea which album it is....so, you then have to find the CD, rip it again on a different PC and keep your fingers crossed. Or you can use MP3 Editor and rename each file individually. :-(

Getting cover art is also a pain - if it fails, then you can't easily make the software find another place to get it from (I think it uses Amazon for cover art).

I've also found that the software can lock up your PC at times...and you won't know it has happened, unless you check the PC via a browser (say) 15 minutes after you inserted the disc (as it usually takes about 8-10 mins to rip a CD). And then you find you have to reboot the VB box, extract your CD, and see how far it got into ripping the CD...and if you re-try to rip the CD it gives you another folder....it doesn't check that (say) Track 1-6 were ripped OK - it just creates a new folder and starts ripping from the start of the CD again.

Seriously, it's free software and it works most of the time...but it has some flaws that can be easily resolved if someone would fix it.

Pretty much does what it claims - provide a turnkey solution for ripping CDs to HD, and serving them over the local net, or playing them through your hi-fi. Recommended.
