Volumio

Last Update: 2021-10-20 17:16 UTC

Volumio (formerly RaspyFi) is a Debian-based distribution originally made for the Raspberry Pi single-board computer, but later expanded to other embedded devices, including CuBox, BeagleBone Black and UDOO. It aims to fully integrate Music Player Daemon, an open-source music player server, into the current Debian releases and to optimise it for Audiophile-quality music playback. Volumio also makes it simple to play music library directly from a USB storage device or from any network-attached storage and it also enables users to listen to web-based radio stations from Spotify, Last.fm and SoundCloud. Starting in October 2014 the project no longer provided a complete Linux distribution; instead it develops Volumio as a music player application only which it makes available for various platforms. The Volumio distribution resumed development in 2016 and is available for x86 computers as well as several ARM devices.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Raspberry Pi 4B and Volumio as digital audio source.

I was using my MacBook Pro for sending music to my DAC (DacMagic Plus) via usb port and I was very happy with it in terms of sound quality.

The solution includes JRiver Media Center (26) running in a iMac as DLNA server and a special audio USB cable from AudioQuest (Forest - the green one).

I play all kind of music and in different resolutions from mp3 (320 kbps), flac to DSD, from 44 to 192 KHz, in 16 and 24 bits.

The problem: My MacBook Pro must be connected to the DAC all time.

With the raspberry pi 4b (2BG) and volumio the sound is better and the solution is cheap, now I don't need to connect my MacBook Pro and I can use my android phone for remote control using BubbleUPnP and from my Spotify account (Web browser or android app) I can send music directly to my volumio server.

Problem resolved, cheap solution and sound quality is excellent.

The sound quality is amazing.

Using a 256MB original Pi and some generic cheap USB DAC for its optical out.

(THX Ultra interconnects and Amps, plus high end hifi speakers.)

The sound is better than any other source I have tried. (I've not used audiophile dedicated CD players, though).

Definitely worth a try if you have the kit lying around or if you like quality music replay.

Note - The Pi's internal sound system is NOT high quality, and while it may give a tiny hint as to the quality of Volumio available via a good interface, it certainly is not hifi, and probably qualifies as the worst source I have tried.
