Last Update: 2019-12-03 23:52 UTC

VectorLinux is a small, fast, Intel based Linux operating system for PC style computers. The creators of VectorLinux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be. What has evolved from this concept is perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere. For the casual computer user there is a lightening-fast desktop with graphical programs to handle daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on IRC to running an FTP server. The power user will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for home or office computer network. Administrators will be equally pleased because of the small size and memory requirements, so the operating system can be deployed on older machines that have long been forgotten.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

This is a great project vector! Been keeping my eye on it for nine years now!

I love the ol' desktop and prefer it, the look and feel!
I wish vector team, they could make the ol' desktop for new releases,
with the dock of apps at the bottom and the menu at the top again, with original background. Absolutely loved vector that way, the way it originally looked, and felt!

@ Vector! Can you make it choose-able, mabe a desktop interface switcher?
One for the new and one for the older desktop as in 7.0 themed?

Have no complaints otherwise, other than mabe, a synaptic package manager, that would be a nice add as well, if' possible!?

Love vector linux! It is fantastic, had no problems with it at all.

However I do feel the software is a bit' dated, that is not problem for some of us though. Hope to see vector make a comeback! With updates!

I'v been seeing many linux projects burn out, or give up on (Reports left on) distrowatch too! It is very sad to see so many linux go the way of the grave yard. *Sad* :((

In order to try and find a distro suitable for my old laptop I ended with VectorLinux. I installed the 64-bit version.

I like to distro hop and I had never tried this one. Boy, what a relief this one is. It's fast, boots quickly and works like a charm.
This distro is running SysV. I had never tried that one either.

In contrast to my previous distro (Manjaro) which often got stuck on my machine, haven't I experienced that with VectorLinux

Pros on this version:
- Fast
- Simple
- Stable

- Not all applications are up to date
- I do not know if there are any security issues.
- Small application repository
