VectorLinux is a small, fast, Intel based Linux operating system for PC style computers. The creators of VectorLinux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be. What has evolved from this concept is perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere. For the casual computer user there is a lightening-fast desktop with graphical programs to handle daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on IRC to running an FTP server. The power user will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for home or office computer network. Administrators will be equally pleased because of the small size and memory requirements, so the operating system can be deployed on older machines that have long been forgotten.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I would just like to add something, I did a review here (2017-10-13), I decided to re-test Vector as I have been doing some distrohopping lately and I love Slackware / Slackware based distros.

Vector, like before is VERY light when running icewm, the install is the easiest out of all the Slack based distros, and very quick / straight forward to do. The issue I encountered previously was updating via the terminal was very slow, not anymore though, to my surprise Vector is running like a charm, I am encountering some weirdness on boot though, some minor errors before slim loads but nothing system breaking, I think I will reinstall Vector with the advanced install process as I think maybe the quick install is the issue?

Anywho, Vector has now replaced the mighty SalixOS install I've had due to its minimalism / light footprint / sane config / high customisation. Salix was for the no brainer moments when I could not be bothered to faff around with my main Slackware machine, I would just power it up and go, now Vector does what Salix does but its much lighter / minimalist which is good for my OCD ;)

To the Vector dev/s, good work. I am glad I decided to reinstall your distro.

(If you are new-ish to Linux, by default you are always root on Vector, I recommend you to go sudo as its safer, do this via "su" then enter password and then type "visudo", scroll down to "root ALL=(ALL) ALL" and add your username ALL=(ALL) ALL directly underneath, hit Ctrl and X at the same time to save then type Y and hit enter to exit)

This distro is freaking good!

Systemd free, easy to install, easy to use!

FAST! secure! full of tools that makes it easy to use! makes other slack based seems like they are children toy!

this is serious rock solid stable software!

The only cons i found:

There is no nvidia optimus driver installer tool, this would have solved my problems

Love ya keep the wonderfull work! Bring it and i will be back to give you 10 !

I have marked this as neutrally as possible, I think a 5 out of 10 is fair, heres why:

I like Slackware and Slack based things, Install was painless, iceWM is lean and fast, Vector looks the part.

A big downside was the fact that there are no local mirrors for me to pull the official updates from, I am based in the UK and had a choice of Canadian Mirrors to use, as you can imagine - it was painfully slow. Shame really, Vector is a nice distro.
