That's also covering the BSD versions, Ubuntu's, Debs, Independants Arches, Amigas and RHL versions. Loved Big-Linux, but was very disappointed how easily it broke. Even their recovery BTRFS didn't successfully fix the system twice. After my 3rd re-install, I had enough! Decided on Alma Linux, great but refused to load certain apps. I came across a YouTube video on Ultramarine Fedora. Decided to investigate for myself. The Fedora installations were a bit unusual for such an incredible systems. They do not use the straight forward Calamares installation method which they should incorporate and certainly not the strangest installation procedure that Open-Suse use. That system is a nightmare and a headache! I am still so pleasantly surprised how smooth the performance of Ultramarine is, its like all well designed Mercedes-Benz engines. It's sheer bliss to use. After months trying out various versions and platforms, I must truly admit, this system grows on you instantly. I have it installed on my 2017 HP G250 2.00Ghz laptop, with 8Mb RAM. Works perfectly on every boot! Have not encountered any glitches. System just works as it should. For you newbies, I edited my dnf.conf and added the following lines underneath each other to speed up your downloads : Open a terminal & type, --------------------------------------- > sudo nano /etc/dnf/dnf.conf ENTER ---------------------------------------- ENTER YOUR PASSWORD, THEN TYPE TEXT EXACTLY INCLUDING UNDERSCORES & CAPITALIZATION. max_parallel_downloads=10 fastestmirror=True Ctrl + O hit enter to save. Yes No Version: 44 Rating: 10 Date: 2026-07-09 Country: The Netherlands Votes: 7 After quite a bit of distro-hopping (Debian, Kubuntu, Manjaro, Endeavour, Fedora, Mint, Cachy, OpenSUSE, ...) I think I've finally found the Linux distribution I want to stick with: Ultramarine Linux. I genuinely enjoyed Cachy. It was fast, polished, and highly optimized. However, after the AUR malware incidents, I became more cautious about "depending" so heavily on community-maintained packages. The AUR is an amazing resource, but I realized I wanted a distribution with a bit more curation while still offering modern software. Arch based distributions are really good in my opinion (not so fan of Manjaro) if you don't rely to deeply on AUR. I also tried openSUSE Tumbleweed and Slowroll, but it ended up being one of my worst Linux experiences. It never really clicked for me, and I constantly found myself troubleshooting instead of enjoying the system. PikaOS, on the other hand, was excellent and gave me one of the best desktop experiences I've had. If you like debian base, try it. Despite all of that, I kept wanting to stay in the Fedora ecosystem. I also gave RakuOS a try. I really like what the developers are trying to accomplish, and there's plenty of potential there. However, it still feels a bit immature and rough around the edges. I'll definitely keep an eye on it, but it's not ready to be my daily driver. The philosophy behind Ultramarine immediately resonated with me. It focuses on being pragmatic, friendly, accessible, and progressive. Instead of expecting users to spend an hour installing codecs, enabling repositories, hunting down drivers, and tweaking settings, Ultramarine ships with sensible defaults so the system is genuinely useful from the very first boot. What surprised me most is how "finished" everything feels. It isn't trying to reinvent Fedora—it simply smooths out many of the rough edges that people often encounter during a fresh Fedora installation. The repositories you actually need are already configured, drivers and codecs are handled sensibly, and the overall experience feels like what many people expect Fedora to be out of the box. It's a really better Fedora. Performance has been excellent, updates have been reliable, and I really appreciate that Ultramarine keeps Fedora's strengths: modern software, strong security with SELinux enabled by default, Btrfs, and a fast-moving ecosystem without feeling chaotic. Another thing I appreciate is that the developers clearly care about reducing friction for everyday users. The documentation is well written, installation is straightforward, and the project feels welcoming rather than intimidating. Whether you're completely new to Linux or simply want a Fedora-based system that "just works," Ultramarine strikes an excellent balance. After trying Arch-based, Debian-based, openSUSE-based, and several independent distributions, I've realized what I actually wanted all along wasn't the newest experiment or the most aggressively optimized setup. I wanted stability, modern software, sensible defaults, and a desktop that lets me focus on using my computer instead of constantly maintaining it. For me, Ultramarine delivers exactly that. The installation went very smoothly and everything worked once installed even Zram was configured properly making the distro speedy right out of the box once rebooted. I installed it on my Lenovo desktop with 3 other OS's, Linux Mint 22.3, Kubuntu 26.04 and MX Linux 25.2. I gave up Windblows a few months ago and I have no regrets nor I would be going back to it. After spending some time and getting the feel of the system and how stable it is with no hiccups, I decided to do a clean install on my Thinkpad Laptop using the entire disk. It is an old X1 Carbon laptop with i5 processor and only 4 GB of Ram. It was not as speedy as my desktop which although old but an i7 with 16 GB ram. Nevertheless, it gave a commendable performance. All in all, a very good experience with this distro unlike Fedora 44 where I had a few hiccups right from the word go. The option to use the Cachy OS tuned kernel was a very welcome surprise and I promptly opted for it. I have been tinkering with Linux in general since the mid 90's when I first used Red Hat Linux. It's been a long time and now I am retired and disabled and I forget the basics. The terminal is a pain so I use good ole google to help me get through. Despite that, I still have a lot of fun using Linux. Anyone who had issues with Fedora should definitely give it a shot, I am sure they would not be disappointed at all.
