I tried pclinuxos and was not happy with the interface and lack of my favourite software. Opensuse tumbleweed lasted about a month before breaking some of my software I consider vital. So I tried a fedora based distro as opposed to a debian based or opensuse based and I have no interest in source based distros. Ultramarine ran all my desired software without snaps, appimages or flatpaks which is impressive. Then came the big test of upgrade from version 42 to 43 which crashed every time I attempted the upgrade but finally after two months it just worked in "Discover" software center and now I am looking forward to using my install for the foreseeable future. I did not expect the dist-upgrade to work at all to my satisfaction so a 2 month wait is not a significant waiting time for the bugs to be sorted out. i find Ultramarine linux removes all the tedious setting up of fedora to do what everybody does. I was missing opensuse yast but found all my ultramarine answers on the internet. Debian answers on the internet were wrong or missing for the version I used to run so this is wonderful. And though it is almost double the size of my debian buster install it also very fast to use and bluetooth headphones work better. Snappy response on internet for instance simply stunned me, it still does. Whatever the system developers are doing, YAY, keep it up. This is the best balance of speed, stability and up to date software and hardware I have found in my search. My new daily driver, which runs steam well also. Big surprise there. Fedora is a good base, and with UM having extra tweaks/repos already in by default, all I had to do to install NVIDIA drivers was to simply do "sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia". The rest was history. That being said, disable secure boot. I had issues with it working right when secure boot was enabled. Other than that, this is a fantastic distro! I'm very, very happy with it. All of my games are running with it with the exception of one very niche game that's been retired since Dec of 2011. But I haven't had any luck with ANY distro (SWG Restoration). So I just use a VM for that one game. No issues there. I like this better than Fedora for some reason. Think I'll be staying here a while! Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: 41 Rating: 10 Date: 2025-09-21 Votes: 5 It's my first Linux Distro after migrating from Windows, and I have to say the experience has been smoother than I expected. I tried a handful of desktop environments at first just to see what suited me best. Budgie was a bit too restrictive or my taste (no flatpacks on the desktop for example), and Gnome, while polished, just didn’t click with the way I like to organize and interact with my desktop. KDE, though—that’s where everything fell into place for me. It looks great right out of the box, but more importantly, it works in a way that feels natural. No fuss, no hunting down obscure settings, and no mental gymnastics just to accomplish simple tasks. Everything I want to do is right there and easily achieved. The only real hiccup I ran into with my first installation was the tiny default boot partition size, which caused low disk space warnings when updating. Thankfully, the developers are already on top of this issue, and from what I’ve read the next version will handle it automatically with more sensible defaults. Until then, it’s not much of a problem as long as you take a minute to set custom partition sizes during installation. Honestly, I don’t see any reason to distro-hop or experiment further. Ultramarine hits the spot for me—fast, highly customizable, and reliable. Plus access to both free and proprietary software is a bonus for me. Was this review helpful?
