Ubuntu MATE

Last Update: 2019-04-18 23:57 UTC

Ubuntu MATE is a desktop Linux distribution which aims to bring the simplicity and elegance of the Ubuntu operating system through a classic, traditional desktop environment - the MATE desktop. MATE is the continuation of the GNOME 2 desktop environment which was used as Ubuntu's default desktop until 10.10 (when it was replaced by Unity). The project began its life as an Ubuntu "remix", but starting with version 15.04, it was formally accepted as an official member of the Ubuntu family of Linux distributions.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I have been trying Ubuntu MATE 19.04 in the last few days, after reading reports that it is faster than other distros. I had previously used Mint 19.1 on the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS codebase for a few months, and found it usable. Unfortunately, MATE created randomly-sized icons for my Chromium apps, and workspaces don't seem to function as expected. That's probably only a small indication of problems, since I've only had it installed a couple of days.

I don't have a touch screen, so Gnome 3 doesn't really work for me. Hence I prefer desktop environments such as Cinnamon or MATE that are oriented towards a mouse and pointer.

I looked at downloading Cinnamon DE from Synaptic, but the version there is only 3.8, compared to the version 4.0.9 that I was using under Mint. I think I'll be looking at a different Ubuntu flavour. I've tried quite a few in the past, and found Cinnamon my favourite.

I have distro-hopped for a number of years, and Ubuntu MATE is, hands down, the best single distro available.

As suitable for n00bs as for power users, its interface allows great customization, including basic layout, with Redmond looking like Windows, Cupertino looking like OSX, and Mutiny (clever name) looks like the old Unity desktop.

For me, the default top menus are what I fell in love with when I first booted Ubuntu 8.04. I had been used to top menus with the Amiga, and it took me about 10 minutes to learn how to use, and I was a total n00b at the time.

Then, GNOME developers decided to fix what wasn't broken, and, while GNOME 3 has its fans, it is a lot heavier using system resources than MATE.

I don't like Mint, but it was the distro I leaped to when it introduced MATE for the first time. Then, after saying "bah" to the problems I still have with Mint, I installed Ubuntu and used the PPA to install MATE. Then, Ubuntu 14.10 had a MATE remix, and a true LTS release of Ubuntu MATE is an official Ubuntu flavor.

MATE lovers get the most updated version of the desktop, and Martin Wimpress is the lead developer of MATE, and it is, once again, the very best distro I have ever used. Its features are like no other distro, making it
a more enhanced user experience that is second, IMHO, to none.

19.04 release is half-baked / beta quality at best.

caja (file manager) keeps crashing.
believe it may be due to a gnome virtual file system bug.

have also experienced other random crashes - including the
brisk menu.
