Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I first tried the "original" Solus Budgie but as I'm used to Debian/Mint/Ubuntu and not that keen on learning a totally new packaging-system and had some unsolved problems with my keyboard-layout i fired up Ubuntu Budgie.
And here we are - the fantastic and extremly funtional Budgie-looks combined with alle the possibilities of Ubuntu. After a little tweaking I'm more than happy to have the most beautiful desktop of all times and an operating system with next to no limits.

Ubuntu Budgie is a very beautiful looking distro that provides nice features, however, I've had serious issues when running Ubuntu Budgie (17.10.1) in my machine.

1. It takes an eternity to boot up (around 2m45s)
2. When I updated the whole system I got an error when opening the terminal (tilix) "bash: /etc/profile.d/vte.sh: No such file or directory" - I didn't found a way on how to remove this message. Terminal works as it should work through. So I decided to remove main terminal (tilix) and installed gnome-terminal and the error haven't been fixed.
3. Ubuntu Budgie brings a awesome thing called "Budgie Themes" which is linked to the "Budgie Welcome" package. It has some themes for you to install, the issue is that when you install any theme, it takes so much to download and install (even if you have a good internet connection), it also often freezes the system - once the theme is applied if you download some programs you must download again the theme and apply it because the new programs doesn't show its icons properly. A interesting fact is that even if you had downloaded the theme, you can't apply it again (after rebooting), you should download it and then apply. I don't know if this is a glitch or something like.
4. Sometimes the Budgie Menu doesn't show up any program.
5. I also had problems using the Weather applet. Everything is just fine except by the fact it doesn't let you change the temperature scale to Celsius. Unfortunately, Fahrenheit seems alien for me haha. Some users said to me on forums that it's possible to change to Celsius by changing the language to English (UK) or another country that isn't (US) in the Settings area, unfortunately I couldn't because once the language chosen is English, all the other "English" variations appears as just "English" - it's so messed up! I won't click in each one and reboot the system - sorry, I don't have such patience.

Not a big fan of Budgie. Crams way too many icons in the title menu and not very customizable.

Also uses ~700 mb of memory on bootup, around 250 more than Mate.

Still very polished for what it is, but I'll stick with Mate.
