Ubuntu

Last Update: 2026-05-09 21:20 UTC

Ubuntu is a complete desktop Linux operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 10 (1,067), 6 months: 10 (1,077), 3 months: 8 (1,202), 4 weeks: 6 (1,448), 1 week: 11 (1,094)

Average visitor rating: 7.8/10 from 392 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

When I built my own desktop PC with a Ryzen 5600g 16Gb RAM and a SSD. I was not looking for much more than a good basic performer. Wasn't going to buy a retail Windows copy, trying to stay within a budget. I did finally buy one of those questionable cheap copies of Windows. It worked for sure, but as time went on Windows just wasn't cutting it. I started trying different Linux distributions like Fedora, Mint, Pop OS and Ubuntu. I settled on Ubuntu for now with 26.04 and its fine and looks nice. No complaints on issues or bugs, but I am still not sold on SNAP store for downloading apps.
But I never liked the ideal on Windows either, I grew up on Windows when you installed a OS and then downloaded and installed whatever programs you would use. Actually, I also had to install most drivers manually back then too. I may go back to Mint because I like the old school feel, and Ubuntu also just starts to feel too much like a corporate OS. The one interesting thing about desktop Linux is choice. You can try a whole bunch of distributions and find just the one that fits you best, and even customize it more to your preferences. Its one thing I don't miss about Windows cookie cutter take it or leave position. I don't require much out of a OS these days, I mostly live in a browser for everything and as long as hardware works, and performance is good enough I am satisfied. I am retired so I like to tinker, which means I may stray from Ubuntu at times. If Ubuntu begins to implement too much AI into it I don't plan to stick around if I cannot disable or remove. A little AI in search is useful, but I don't care for anymore then that.

It's been a long, long time since I looked at Ubuntu although I do run a cut down version of Kubuntu on a spare laptop. I've been a Minty for about 20 or so years with the last 12 being on LMDE. With the reliability of my Kubuntu device in mind I decided to give Ubuntu 26.04 a spin around the block and I was pleasantly surprised by how polished it has become over the last two decades. In fact with one or two caveats I'm happy to declare that Ubuntu 26.04 is now my daily driver.

You might ask why bother when Mint and LMDE in particular have given me a reliable workplace for such a long period. I'm a writer and I use OpenOffice for 8 to 10 hours each day along with Firefox for doing research. The answer is Cinnamon. There's nothing particularly wrong with Cinnamon but when I upgraded to LMDE 7 very little had changed and there was no discernible improvements in performance, software, or aesthetics. I therefore installed Gnome 47 and removed Cinnamon which is an easily done procedure, then with the assistance of Gnome Extension Manager I built the desktop that I wanted which is another easily done thing. With the release of Ubuntu 26.04 I decided to have a look at Gnome 50 and was not disappointed, so after working the Gnome Extensions magic I've ended up with the most modern and up to date workplace possible. It's like being shifted into a brand new office with all the latest devices.

Pros:
Speed, aesthetics, reliability, repos, installed software.

Cons:
The first iso that I downloaded must have been corrupted somehow because the installer didn't work as it should. After downloading another image from a different mirror everything worked perfectly.

Hardware used:
5 yr old Dell Latitude 5300 - i7 with 16gig ram.

Score: 10/10.

Ubuntu 26.04 — Breathing New Life into Old Hardware

I've been running Ubuntu 26.04 on my aging workstation (Intel Core i3-4170, Intel HD Graphics 4400, 8 GB RAM) and I'm genuinely impressed by how well it performs. This is not the kind of hardware that modern operating systems usually treat kindly, but Ubuntu 26.04 handles it with ease.

The desktop is smooth and responsive — no stuttering, no excessive memory consumption, no waiting around. The Intel HD 4400 is detected and configured out of the box with proper acceleration, which makes everyday tasks like web browsing, video playback, and office work feel completely comfortable even on decade-old integrated graphics.

What really won me over, though, is the legacy hardware support for printers and scanners. I have an older printer and scanner that other distros either ignored or required painful manual driver hunting to get working. Ubuntu 26.04 detected both devices automatically during setup. CUPS handled the printer flawlessly, and the scanner was recognized immediately through SANE — no third-party repositories, no compiling from source, no headaches.

It's clear that Canonical hasn't forgotten users who don't upgrade their hardware every year. For anyone still running a reliable Sandy Bridge or Haswell-era machine and struggling with other distros, Ubuntu 26.04 is an easy recommendation. It's stable, polished, and respectful of older equipment.
