Ubuntu

Last Update: 2020-08-08 21:20 UTC

Ubuntu is a complete desktop Linux operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 4 (1,646), 6 months: 4 (1,784), 3 months: 4 (1,459), 4 weeks: 6 (1,324), 1 week: 4 (1,525)

Average visitor rating: 7.54/10 from 586 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

After distrohopping a lot, I decided to try Ubuntu.

I don't think the Snaps are totally bad, they just need a lot of improvements. That's why I don't use them yet. Apart from that, it's a great and well polished distro.

I used Linux Mint a few months ago. It's a wonderful distro, I have nothing against it, but I really wanted to use a distro with GNOME because it's a more productive desktop environment IMO.

My first option would be to use Pop!_OS, but it didn't work on my notebook (it's not UEFI and I want to dual boot with Windows).

It's what I expect from Ubuntu: reliable, safe and user-friendly, no issues with drivers or printers.
It ran slow as molasses on a conventional HD, but I changed this to an SSD and now it runs reasonably fast. So, Ubuntu is still my trusted daily driver. And snaps? Glad they have them, they're faster than before.
However, I encountered a weird bug (not present in Xubuntu and Lubuntu). I did install the meta-package of libreoffice and it didn't install the ODB-databasedriver, had to install it myself.

I've been running 20.04 off & on for a few months on my laptop & have not been impressed. It seems far more bug prone & unstable than Mageia 7 or LMDE 4 on separate partitions of the same laptop.

Pros:
+ Nice clean simple installer
+ Good hardware support (aside from annoying HDMI issues mentioned below)
+ Creates a great base system for lots of friendlier & less bug prone Linux distros
+ Web searches give plenty of answers available to help remedy all the various bugs (of which there are so many this is barely a pro)

Cons:
- Lots of bugs & problems related to package management (it may partly be the old buggy laptop, but Mageia runs almost flawlessly on the same hardware)
- I'm running Vivaldi to view a few select websites & it crashes very often on Ubuntu 20.04 - far more than the same browser on LMDE 4
- Most other Distros keep giving me audio to my far nicer TV speakers via HDMI after every boot, but Ubuntu is far more annoying & random about switching to laptop speakers most of the time
- The Gnome 3 Desktop modified for Ubuntu seems a bit better than what I see of Vanilla Gnome, but it is ultimately clunky & poorly designed in my view. The desktop feels a lot slower than Mageia KDE & I after every couple of crashes I switch over to something else so I never have enough time to truly adapt. It's livable & can be used, but feels slower & more constrained, like Magiea with KDE set to a slower compositor effects setting. Between the adaptation curve, annoying default notifications (Clementine changing songs is far less annoying in other Desktops), & general slowness, I find the cons more than offset the sort of nice Gnome settings centre.
- Did I mention how many times I had to mess with the command line & look up ways to fix broken package management to allow updates & software installs? Well it happened enough that it is worth an extra mention.
