I've run a home lab for years and decided to try TrueNAS because of ZFS and the promise of a stable, appliance-like OS. As a simple storage box it was fine, but the moment I upgraded the system, things went downhill fast. After a standard upgrade from Fangtooth, the server rebooted with the Web UI completely broken. The system was online, I could ping it and even access SMB shares, but I was stuck in an endless login loop. Resetting the root password via the console worked according to the CLI, yet the UI still refused to accept it. Clearing cache, using incognito, or trying another machine made no difference, the middleware and authentication clearly went out of sync, effectively locking me out unless I managed everything via command line. On top of that, the Apps ecosystem was extremely brittle. I was only running Plex and Nextcloud, yet k3s often ate noticeable CPU at idle, and after the reboot my apps never recovered, stuck in "Deploying" due to a permission error that did not exist before. In the end, TrueNAS felt like software that works only as long as you never touch it. I lost an entire weekend debugging an upgrade that should have been routine, and I am now moving to OMV or plain Debian with Docker.

Installed 25.04-BETA.1 Fangtooth as a replacement for ProxMox homelab. Very happy with it, i run approx 10 docker apps, an LXC container, setup a encrypted cloud sync, snapshots, smb shares etc. All of that in a very nice GUI and dashboard.

- separated disk to install TrueNas
- instances is still in beta at this moment

Tip) if you have no room for a extra disk or do not want to use your bigger SSD/HDD's as boot disk (as you can't use the remaining capacity on the disk and you only need about 16gb). I installed an M.2 NGFF A E Key WiFi to M.2 Key M SSD-adapter, to add a extra disk and removed the wifi adapter as i do not need that in the homelab.

Works great.. love that they support zfs

After using TrueNAS Scale for the past couple years I've found it to be very reliable. It works great for any of my Network Backup or Storage Access needs between my mobile and desktop devices. After looking into some learning resources it's pretty great for beginners to dig into something more advanced. The Apps do require frequent maintenance and sometimes need to be redeployed after updates change things (Depends on the container) but otherwise everything else is set and go. I couldn't think of a better NAS software to run than TrueNAS.
