ToriOS

Last Update: 2018-09-17 02:05 UTC

ToriOS is a Debian-based distribution which is designed to work on older computers, even 32-bit machines which do not support running PAE-enabled kernels. ToriOS strives to maintain the KISS principle and uses JWM to provide a lightweight graphical user interface.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

My girlfriend installed ToriOS and she had great experience with it. I thought, why not do the same with my old PC? it was sitting at my attic collecting dust. I cleaned the dust, downloaded ToriOS, created the LiveCD and installed it. I have never seen a similar installer before. It was so fast. ToriOS detected all my hardware. I like the idea of including only few apps by default. I wish I could buy a smart phone with ToriOS installed by default as I'm tired of all these apps on my smart phone.
Anyway, ToriOS is definitely a game-changer. I mean, it's ridiculously fast and stable. No surprise here as it's based on Debian. I didn't believe it can revive a semi-dead machine. I think my hard drive has some bad sector.

Best Debian distro in the world. Goes fast now, deleted all the apps didn't use but figured out how to do uninstall. Synoptic had a lot of interesting downloads and going to try them out and see what they do. Torios is super ahsome too.

Like Toros so much now, works real good and plan to keep it, but might try another Dubian soon. Got lot of cool icons and learning to use the terminal.

Happy found torios, you should too and try it.

ToriOS is a very uncommon distro with lots and lots of applications for everyone use. A 32bit iso is something I really needed for my old Dell laptop 32bit. Was running Ubuntu before ToriOS and quite happy now!

JWM is not my favorite window manager, prefer a desktop environment like mate or cinnamon. Getting used to JWM and but don't know how to configure it.

ToriOS does run better than my old Windows98 which was really slow, Browsers don't freeze up as much now.
Lot happier than before, everyone should try ToriOS.
