SteamOS is an Arch-based Linux distribution developed by Valve Corporation, a US video game developer, publisher and digital distribution company. It comes with Steam, Valve's own video game store, and it is the default Linux distribution for Valve's line of gaming hardware, including the Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Steam Frame. The distribution also supports some third-party handheld devices, such as Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally, but it can also be installed on standard personal computers. SteamOS uses the KDE Plasma desktop as its default user interface.

 Ive been using SteamOS on my Deck for about 3 years and its okay. SteamOS is a great beginner distro as It provides all the tools for a console like experience making gaming simple yet providing a desktop for any other needs. Also SteamOS is possible to navigate with the controller which Isn't very comfortable but very nice to have the tools out of the box to do so. But even with that said I would not recommend it to someone trying to use it on a desktop as It makes the administration process difficult due to all the restrictions set for new users and security measures you would expect from a basic Linux computer are not set nor are you prompted to set It (Ex: Root Password). Those very cons Is why I believe SteamOS is great for only gaming esp with kernel level anti-cheats. Closing this out I believe SteamOS is good for some users but Is Incredibly overhyped when other distributions provide the same functionalities and more for the price of Inconvenience of configuring and tinkering your operating system.

 I am writing this on SteamOS Version 3.8, and the experience has been outstanding. From startup to shutdown, the interface feels smooth, responsive, and designed with gaming at its heart. Steam integration is flawless, making it effortless to manage my library and jump into a session with perfect controller support and excellent Proton compatibility. Games run beautifully, and even titles from other platforms feel right at home. Desktop Mode offers a capable Linux environment for everyday tasks while keeping the gaming focus front and center. Performance has been consistently strong, the visuals are polished, and stability has exceeded my expectations. SteamOS 3.8 blends console‑like ease with the power of Linux, making it a joy to use every day.
