Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Star is undoubtedly one of the fastest, lightweight distributions that Linux has to offer. Devuan based, offering several derivatives.

Currently running Star Fluxbox ascii (testing), very stable, responsive and themed very nicely. No issues with wifi on my Dell desktop.

OOTB lean with a few choice applications and the star- welcome offers additional support, very keen distribution.

Star is by far the best Devuan derivative, currently running Fluxbox, Openbox and JWM on my Toshiba laptop.

Zero issues with WiFi, like Connman network manager over Wicd or any other. Smart choice!

Attractive dark theme and icons, comfort vision wise above much brighter themes.

Truly a minimalist approach to computer configuration, comes packed with a handful of needed applications. No need to pre-install the kitchen sink if not wanted by the user.

Welcome-screen (star-welcome) is a nifty tool to add some tools and applications, glad to see it in use still.

Star is a sophisticated, first class rated distribution and can't go wrong with Devuan as a base. My daily driver is Fluxbox and about 6 months ago upgraded to Ascii and then later about two months ago to Ceres without even a single error message and runs stable as Jessie. Ceres is the unstable branch of Devuan, yet the devs at Devuan is not making the same mistakes as Debian with premature releases creating a dependency nightmare.

Give Star a spin and might enjoy what you find!

STAR is an excellent distribution, use it on my Dell 32 bit machine with JWM. Out of many 32 bit distros found STAR to be the fastest and beyond stable. Runs like a new PC.

Wifi? Ran a check and STAR comes with every wifi driver than Debian or Ubuntu does. Strange that someone might have issues other than it could be their router, or ISP causing the issues.

STAR is a minimalist distribution, no button or automatic notification of updates, very lame thinking such a creature with JWM. That is what the terminal is for. No automatic updating the menu, that is why it comes with a text editor and a .jwmrc file while other files with menu, etc are found in .config/jwm.

A minimalist distribution is not quite barebones but allows the user who should have skills efficient enough to configure the install to their liking.

STAR does the job, I'm happy and grateful for that!
