SmartOS

Last Update: 2019-08-01 05:15 UTC

SmartOS is an open-source UNIX-like operating system based on illumos, a community fork of OpenSolaris. It features four technologies - ZFS (a combined file system and logical volume manager), DTrace (a dynamic tracing framework for troubleshooting kernel and application problems), Zones (a lightweight virtualisation solution) and KVM (a full virtualisation solution for running a variety of guest operating systems, including Linux, Windows, BSD and Plan9). SmartOS is designed to be particularly suitable for building clouds and generating appliances.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Beautiful robust operating system base like solaris, made by Joyent inspired by opensolaris coming from solaris 10 from Sun Microsystems. It has many features first of all for all ZFS. Personally I feel the lack of a reference hardware (as was SPARC) and the possibility of having the desktop development version, even minimal.

Very robust OS and probably the best for container virtualization. Each container zone or KVM VM leaves on its own zfs file system, which can be snapshotted, rolled back, sent/received incrementally to a remote host. Data sets, like htdocs and db, can live on a separate zpool and given to a zone via lofs. You can build your own packages from sources by using pkgsrc environment and keep the applications up-to-date. The drawback is incompatibility with some hardware and leaving support for Linux LX containers.

This container OS. Runs "opensource Solaris" (joyent) zones in a feature weight resource efficient manner, also has KVM support on Intel HW for running Linux/Unix/Windows hosts.

ZFS for filesystem and dtrace for program debugging (even lacking source) are a godsend.

Did not 10/10 due to slight lag in NVMe support.
