Slax

Last Update: 2019-12-03 23:52 UTC

Slax is a minimalist desktop live CD based on Debian's "stable" branch. It boots into a simple desktop using the Fluxbox window manager which offers a small collection of applications, including the Chromium web browser, a text editor and a calculator. Prior to version 9.x, Slax was a Slackware-based live CD featuring the KDE desktop and a wide collection of pre-installed software for daily use together with useful recovery tools for system administrators.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

for 9.10.0 - a 9 out of 10 for simplicity.

for 9.11.0 - an epic Fail, takes too long to start.

. the concept of SLAX is as an alternative to your home computers O.S. and allows you to jump on the Internet without worrying about what garbage they may be truing to infect you with.
. Chrome makes it easy if you have a G-mail Account.
.
. so, why bother with SLAX? well, you can save what you have up/down loaded directly to your hard drive without the worry of anything else but what you've downloaded being on your hard drive when complete.
. One little trick I found useful was to have a a Transmition.AppImage in your saving directory for Appimages do seem to want to work with this design.
.
. the final benefit of SLAX 9.9.0 & 9.10.0 are, when your done, just log off and shut it down., disconnec from the Internet, and remove SLAX from your DVD/USB and - thats it. . no residuals.

Being a distrohopper of from-RAM distros, I had already tried the Slackware's Slax by Tomas Matejicek years ago. I found its modular approach very interesting, as well as its graphic design, and his intentions in general. It was sad that he had to suspend development due to lack of funds and time, but it is a great joy to see him again on track, this time from the hand of Debian.

PROS:
Installation copying just 1 folder!!! And working great. That's unique...
Small, only essentials
Great theme, again
I do like very much CLI (but I think I'm not part of the majority)
Very fast
I think Slax is currently the best from-RAM distro if you know Linuxland very well

CONS:
No desktop, it's hard to get used to it
After installing a number of programs it becomes somewhat slow

It's a distro that should be more recognized, thank you, Tomas, congrats!!!
