Strengths: The system runs flawlessly and extremely smoothly. Initial RAM usage is ridiculously low, barely 500MB, responding instantly to any process. For reviving older hardware or working on servers and clean development environments where aesthetics are not a priority, its stability, based on Slackware and Salix, is outstanding. Weaknesses: Visually, the distribution feels quite outdated. The default color palette, window design, and especially the generic icon pack give it an old-fashioned look that lacks the modernity, cohesion, and visual effects we're accustomed to today. Furthermore, package management via Gslapt has a steep learning curve and is not very intuitive for the average user, as dependency resolution follows Slackware's classic logic. Conclusion: Slackware is rock solid in terms of optimization and speed, but its sloppy and outdated graphical interface detracts significantly from its usability and daily user experience. Yes No Version: 7.7 Rating: 10 Date: 2025-04-26 Votes: 12 I have a asus eee pc 901 and after trying many of the only handful of 32-bit distros slackel seemed to fit the bill the most for what i wanted out of a 32-bit distro. It offers a livecd boots up well detects my wifi and connects to router via nmtui. I opted for the openbox wm which is nice and lite. The look and feel of it out of the box is distinctive but i think it looks good nonetheless. it has many good tools out of the box including an installer and being a slackware variant it has potentially a large package database particularly in slackbuilds.org to keep you happy. its nice to find a i686 distro thats this solid and with a nice style and polish to boot. The best and most interesting 32-bit distro that i have tried and most closely suits my needs. Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: 7.5 Rating: 9 Date: 2022-04-02 Votes: 117 Pentium M non-pae, 1 GB RAM. Installation is not automatic. But reading the Startup Guide new Linux users will handle the installation easily. RAM during installation ca. 350 MB. On our old laptop installation paused shortly a couple of times during the process, but no problems. Not necessary to forcepae. Initially there is a choice of several install languages. Mine was not listed, but I could select it during the installation and got the system and apps (except LibreOffice) installed in my locale. When rebooting the WiFi didn't work. Had to go to System Services and enable Network Manager (and PCMCIA). It boots into wrong choice of kernel (smp). So I have to click Advanced option and then avoid the smp alternatives. To avoid swap, we primarily use Abiword and Gnumeric and a light browser when working. (Firefox and LibreOffice simultaneously are OK, but is soon gobbling up the 1 GB RAM.) The Gslapt Package Manager is fast and userfriendly. The repository in Sourcery Slackbuild Manager is more comprehensive. Neither sort the programs in categories. I was not able to install Abiword from any of the repositories. Not belonging to the computer generation we got, however, instant help to install it successfully by the Terminal. I recommend Slackel primarily because it is booting fast, is stable and allow me to easily connect to all of my peripherals without using cmd.
