Scientific Linux

Last Update: 2018-07-11 00:01 UTC

Scientific Linux is a recompiled Red Hat Enterprise Linux, co-developed by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Although it aims to be fully compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, it also provides additional packages not found in the upstream product; the most notable among these are various file systems, including Cluster Suite and Global File System (GFS), FUSE, OpenAFS, Squashfs and Unionfs, wireless networking support with Intel wireless firmware, MadWiFi and NDISwrapper, Sun Java and Java Development Kit (JDK), the lightweight IceWM window manager, R - a language and environment for statistical computing, and the Alpine email client.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

VERY slow and unreliable, real basic copy of Red Hat.
To big they need to do a lot of clean up work.

Not as stable/solid as it should be. I used the distro for about 6 months. Here's my experience in a nutshell:

*First and foremost: updating 7.4 to 7.5 was a real pain.

*Networking: Was not compatible with my built-in BCM43XX (I was kind of expecting that though, since most distros I have tried are not), what I *wasn't* expecting is that the USB modems of the TPLINK TL series are also not supported. I finally made it with an Edimax EW-7811Un, but the network was always VERY slow and unreliable.

*Filesystem: Its XFS implementation gets easily corrupted after e.g. a power shortage. Made my life very difficult since it corrupted many of my Yum packages, which in turns makes your life difficult for an upgrade.

*Compatibility: One would assume that Fedora/RedHat/CentOS packages are at least partially compatible. That is rarely the case. I increasingly found myself having to build software from source.

My honest overall advice would be: feel free to try, but use something else for daily tasks.

Windows user learning Linux, rating reflects my deficit in knowledge of setting up to mimic Windows systems. Applications for windows are easy to install and to identify. Second, my use of NVIDIA Graphics Card and drivers are not supported. Still, as a student of Linux Systems it is a platform that mimics Red Hat commands well.

Thank You.
