Robolinux

Last Update: 2025-08-30 06:51 UTC

Robolinux is a user-friendly and intuitive operating system based on the latest long term support release of Ubuntu. One of the project's more interesting features is the availability of a pre-configured virtual machine support pack with Windows XP or Windows 7 - a VirtualBox setup which allows the user to install and run the Windows operating system seamlessly alongside Robolinux. This is an optional add-on that must be downloaded from the project's online store.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I saw this distribution in the latest distributions section of DW and decided to give it a try. I have previously tried Ubuntu Cinnamon but it didn't really work because it kept giving me error messages. Robolinux doesn't have its own installer, it uses Ubuntu Cinnamon and adds Robolinux's own programs and themes to it during installation. My first impression was that there was nothing special about it that would differentiate it from Ubuntu. The developer has managed to remove many of the bugs in the Cinnamon version. The desktop, fonts and colors are good. The default is a dark theme but I personally prefer a lighter one. With a few settings changes it became fully functional.

Robolinux offers nine years of support for its distribution. I only understand this issue in business use. I researched Robolinx's background and there is one developer behind it. I don't think this support has enough shoulders to support it for such a long time. What if the developer gets sick? Home users certainly won't use the same distribution for nine years. Apparently Robolinux has some business customers because it promises this and is also able to offer its own phones.

One thing that bothers me all the time when using Robolinux is that the developer offers a paid add-on package at a very high price. Many of its programs are made under his nickname. The developer himself says that the add-on package is extremely popular. I don't believe this. I haven't seen any reviews or videos about this package and no user has informed me about it. Robolinux leaves a lot of confusion in this regard. What if the add-ons are just regular Linux programs?

Robolinux leaves a lot of questions open. The developer has made a good introduction video for the latest version. Why hasn't he made a similar one for the plus package? I would think this would increase sales. There is nothing wrong with the basic version of Robolinux but because it has some fundamental flaws, I feel that I have to use other distributions.

I use mate version and t just works and looks excellent. It's very stable and elegant while retaining the resemblance to Windows OS so you don't need to sacrifice your current familiarity with the desktop layout; its very beginner friendly.

No problems during or after the installation process. Localization is perfect. Be sure to apply all updates. System settings are extensive, so you can tailor your system as you like. The most useful apps come preinstalled. No cons so far. This might be the distribution you are looking for.

So, it just works. What more can you ask for. A+

Robolinux is one of the best distributions I've used.
When I install it, I know everything will work and I'll have a dependable and light desktop (xfce).
I've never experienced any crashes or major issues that weren't a result of something I did.

Agree with the people who said that it's an underrated distro! I've already used Robolinux on both old (a 2005 HP Desktop) and newer (a 2016 HP notebook) machines and it was always thoroughly reliable and solid. The XFCE DE is awesome: fast, simple & cosy!
