Q4OS is a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution designed to offer classic-style user interface (Trinity) and simple accessories, and to serve stable APIs for complex third-party applications, such as Google Chrome, VirtualBox and development tools. The system is also very useful for virtual cloud environments due to its very low hardware requirements.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Impressive... Fast light and stable, at first sight... I have to give this a ten because my old mini-laptop (Compaq mini) was running well from a USB stick, not even a hard drive attached because I modified it a lot, and removed the battery, fan etc too, so it's a silent and light laptop that works well... One of my top favs. Thanks

Once installed, this OS is great. The default layout looks like MSWindows XP (though that's easily changed). In fact, everything about it is geared to look and work like XP (including the look of the icons). This would be great for someone switching from MSWindows (XP or 7) to Linux. As an OS in it's own right, it works magnificently. It's a general purpose desktop OS, using the Trinity desktop environment - a simplified version of KDE. The only caveat is the installation process. Where most other distros ask you whether you want to install the new distro alongside the old, or erase the disc and use the entire disc for the new installation, or other, Q4OS's installer makes/lets you do all the partition work manually, and then only installs the bare OS. Then, once you reboot and reach the desktop, you have to install your choice of basic programs or full desktop, using the ‘Desktop Profiler’. It took a full 3/4 of an hour for that part alone (for the full desktop). Most other distros take about 15-20 minutes to install on my machine. Q4OS took one hour in total. This would/will dissuade anyone, coming from MSWindows, from ever installing Q4OS, unfortunately. Since Q4OS is based on Debian (stable) why not use the 'buntu installer which simply asks you to choose between options and does it all for you.
