Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

When it booted, it was fine, a good flavour of Debian designed for my Puri.sm hardware (Librem 13.) But it repeatedly begins failing to boot, crashing to busybox. Reinstalls survived a few boots, then the same behavior.

Lacks stability. Dev teams seem to be skeletonized to support the push for Librem 5 phone. May need to wait a while on this one.

One the best GNU/Linux I have ever used. It has GNOME vanilla desktop environment and based on debian testing so you get latest packages with flatpak support out of the box. Since it is a GNU/Linux distro it contains only free software and a good stability. GNOME integration is absolutely the best next to Fedora linux.

I'm glad that I didn't go looking at the video reviews of this os before I installed it on the second drive in my T430. This a very polished, professional, and enjoyable system. If I hadn't already installed Manjaro on my main drive, I would gladly install this as my daily driver, and indeed, frequently find myself hitting F12 at boot to go to it. Most of the criticism is easily addressed by reading the PureOS Wiki and its tips section. The Purism team has put together a great resource that explains how to add Tor to the browser, and FAQ's section shows in great detail how to add Firefox extensions, too. Very simple to do, and the pages walk you through the process with clear pictures. If I can find a nit to pick, it's that I have to tether my cell as a hot spot, but I don't really mind running it that way one bit, and haven't bothered to look for a solution. Every true FOSS os that I have tried has this same issue (e.g., Trisquel), and it's to be expected, given the philosophy behind the FOSS ideology. Once configured, which is quite easy given the quality of the documentation, it's a great system. If you're looking for a FOSS distro that's focus is on privacy and security, this is definitely an os worth looking at. I don't think the live usb does it justice. Purism did a great job with this. If it's compatible with your computer, I can highly recommended doing a full install of this. 10/10
