Porteus is a fast, portable and modular live CD/USB medium based on Slackware Linux. The distribution started as a community remix of Slax, another Slackware-based live CD, with KDE 3 as the default desktop for the i486 edition and a stripped-down KDE 4 as the desktop environment for the x86_64 flavour. The lightweight LXDE is available as an alternative desktop environment.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Whenever I install something on any other OS, I always get this nagging feeling, what if this breaks my system?

Not so on porteus. Install something as a module, put in the the modules folder, if it breaks, just delete the module. The rest of the system and modules are magically restored!

Same with the live system. I can run any command on the live system, without any worries of what if this hoses my system?

I know systems like puppy does it too. But Porteus is the only system that is as minimal as puppy or tiny core, but provides much more functionality and looks great too!

Great concept on a great OS. Keep up the good work!

I am using Porteus more than 1 year , it's very very well...
one of the most great features that make Porteus a God among another distros is being modular !
With Modular feature and great Porteus Forum and developers we always have up-to-date kernel...
Now that I'm writing this review my Porteus is running on 5.0.0 rc 8 kernel ! cheers porteus developers...
In a word , Porteus is GREAT.

I have been using Lubuntu 18.04 on my live USB with persistent data for a while, but as soon as I hard reset (without letting it reboot normally) everything goes bonkers (because with persistent data you need to restart for changes to take effect). Having to reinstall and download the apps through the software center/terminal everytime it happened was a hassle, and considering they changed desktop enviroment, I was in need of another USB live distro with LXDE Desktop Enviroment (since it's the one I've the most experience with)

Porteus gets the job done, this distro was made for USB drives, no contest. I've made a little list of pros Porteus has over Lubuntu with persistent data, if anyone is interested:

- Smaller ISO size, so more USB drives available to install it on.
- Boots faster than Lubuntu (understandable since Lubuntu is meant to install on HDD).
- Can encrypt persistent data.
- Easier way to backup persistent data to HDD (normally I keep the ".dat" file on the same USB so I can use on other computers).
- Barely any programs, which means you can customize it the programs you and only you use (for example I use Waterfox instead of Firefox so I can save even more space by not having Firefox on the ISO), Modules and AppImages are an amazing way of doing this.
- Survives crashes (boots to desktop as if nothing happened).
- You can get all your programs working without the need of using internet, provided you already downloaded the Modules/AppImages to your HDD beforehand, good for people with limited internet or data plans.
- PrintScreen Key has a menu which allows you to resize screenshots (Lubuntu just saves the whole screen to another folder without letting you know).
