It's a really well-made Linux distro! It boots up quickly and has excellent graphics, which are also highly customisable. It's a distro that truly embodies open source, giving users a great deal of freedom, and it's just as stable and up-to-date as the more famous ones. OpenMandriva was a wonderful surprise, both in the rolling and stable branches, and I highly recommend trying it! Congratulations to all the developers for doing such a great job! Yes No Version: 24.12 Rating: 6 Date: 2025-10-04 Votes: 1 Much about this distro seems very well done, and initial setup is one of the smoothest experiences I've had yet. I'm not exactly new to Linux, but have only been using it on the desktop for about two years now. Libre works as expected, and bottles installs and manages the few proprietary Win apps I need to use. This is my first time using Dolphin, and I love it. Two panes should be mandatory for any gui based file manager! I have noticed a few glitches, like when opening the second pane it doesn't seem to size the contents correctly, but it corrects when you resize the window. This may be related to the Oxygen theme I based my current personalizations on, I don't remember seeing that when using the default theme. Package managers are pretty much as expected, a little dated but functional. This is the one area where performance seems weak, spending 10 to 15 seconds minimum refreshing packages every time you open Dnfdrake or Discover. Managing updates through the terminal is faster, but ideally (IMO) it should all work through the GUI. The one kicker for me, and the item that dropped my rating to a 6, is the awful implementation of SAMBA. It's likely my knowledge is too limited to make it work as it should, but this is the first distro that required edits to smb.conf just to get it working. I'm in a mixed OS environment so the ability to access SMB shares is a must. The only way I could make these reliably available was to mount them in fstab. These shares change pretty frequently, so the need to email the admin and edit fstab every time the folder structure changes kind of defeats the purpose of SMB. I hope they ultimately fix this, but as it is now this is probably best considered a standalone distribution. Was this review helpful? Have successfully used the Rock versions on a few machines and like the low update model which is great for additional computers or ones you don’t use as often. Stability and hardware compatibility are excellent in my experience. Initial setup can be done using the Welcome app. This is a comprehensive launchpad for installing useful software and general tweaks to get running as required. This can be good news for novice users and offers a choice of web browsers including proprietary ones like Vivaldi/Chrome/Edge. Additional DEs can be installed from here too, even Cosmic which works flawlessly on an elderly Dell laptop. Virtualbox available too which is handy alongside Gnome Boxes. DnfDrake, DNFDragora and a software updater are available for dated looking GUI package management, but dnf commands are fast via terminal and is my preference. Not needed to use Flatpaks, but appimages run fine OpenMandriva provides a flexible and straightforward experience from the start, and caters well for different user levels looking for fixed or rolling releases.
