OpenELEC is a Linux-based embedded operating system built specifically to run Kodi, the open source entertainment media hub. The idea behind OpenELEC is to allow people to use their Home Theatre PC (HTPC) like any other device one might have attached to a TV, like a DVD player or Sky box. Instead of having to manage a full operating system, configure it and install the packages required to turn it into a hybrid media center, OpenELEC is designed to be simple to install, manage and use, making it more like running a set-top box than a full-blown computer.

After using OpenELEC on a RPi for more than 18 months now, I am still amazed at how smooth and trouble-free it is. It can get a bit squirly if you have many, many addons, but I've always been able to fix any oddness by removing/updating the addons.
Also impressive is the fact that it handles full 1080p movies without any hiccups or issues, along with their Dolby Digital/DTS audio as well.

It does have some idiosyncrasies but no more than (and generally far fewer than) any other media center solution.

I replaced a fairly-beefy Debian PC with a $35 Pi for all my media center needs - how is that possible??

Seriously, the OpenELEC team rocks, I am very thankful that such a great media center solution exists. Thanks, guys!

I got sick and tired of trying to get kodi to stop crashing on Windows 10 pulled an old 20 gig hard drive out of an old laptop installed openelec to it, very simple easy and right from the Windows 10 computer I was having trouble with in about 20 minutes including downloading and WOW... Now if I want to watch kodi with no stuttering skips crashes or errors...all I do is hit F12 on boot pick the 20 gig openelec drive and bamm kodi is up and running 1080p live streams and shows absolutely flawless.. so simple so easy can't believe it!!!! I couldn't believe the time I have wasted since the 17.3 update on Windows 10 making a build to only have it crash everytime i try to start it the next day. No messing with dual boot or anything, If i do not want to run openelec i just let my windows boot normally and it doesn't even know the drive is there. I am going to be an openelecer for life now. Thanks so much for this option being out there and letting me get back to watching kodi instead of trying to fix it all the time.

Couldn't make either this or libreelec work. Same thing in each case, flickering screen as soon as Kodi was configured, no mouse or keyboard. Gave up and went to archbang, in which everything works just fine. Well, after some difficulties with grub, see review of archbang.
