Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Obarun is basically Arch just better. Expect to be confronted with everything that this implies:
You will not have a fully automated graphical installer doing everything for you and then boot directly into X.
Installation is a very verbose and well made shell script. The live image will not log you automatically into any X session. As long as you read up on basic Linux stuff you will be full of joy with having found Obarun.
Service management is not only a breeze but you can actually simply read any service file and understand easily what it executes.
One feature I have never seen in any distro is the possibility to group services into chunks for specific tasks. This is incredible for networking on demand, different development platforms on the fly etc.

Pro: Boot really fast also on a low spec netbook (Asus eeePC Atom N455 1,6GHz 1GB Ram)

Cons: From a live system nowadays you expect it boot to a GUI not to a console asked to supply username and password.

It still has also a long run to be an OS which you can think to chose. IMHO

Installing was a breeze, JWM works as well as lxqt or lxde but lighter. From that point on I installed Awesome and Openbox and both worked well, then I went on in familiarizing myself with the new 66 tool system. This is fun. I can start and stop services and see their status simply and easily. I have never been able to do this with any system, it all now makes sense.

As far a X64 platforms go there is not much you can NOT do with this system. This is like walking in a swamp or quick sand and finally stepping into solid ground.

Obarun is it for me, no more distro hopping.
