Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Installing was a breeze, JWM works as well as lxqt or lxde but lighter. From that point on I installed Awesome and Openbox and both worked well, then I went on in familiarizing myself with the new 66 tool system. This is fun. I can start and stop services and see their status simply and easily. I have never been able to do this with any system, it all now makes sense.

As far a X64 platforms go there is not much you can NOT do with this system. This is like walking in a swamp or quick sand and finally stepping into solid ground.

Obarun is it for me, no more distro hopping.

I used the last version of JWM 042019 and it worked flawlessly. This was an install for a friend wanting to learn more Linux than his Ubuntu has allowed her.

I have been using Obarun daily for 3 years now and even though I try pretty much anything linux based without systemd, I wouldn't replace Obarun for anything.

The init-service-mngmt beats runit, openrc, sysvinit, by FAR!!
From that point on you are free to use arch and any arch based repository to construct your own custom system. Knowing that with s6/66 and a good kernel your system will always boot up and give you a tty, anything you try can be undone the same way it was done.

Using pacman's ability to install any package to a different root environment, you can remove the init of any other linux system, then install s6 and 66 on top of that system. Debian, Void, are just a few I have tried.

This system is a little known gem that will eventually bring a tsunami of changes to the industry.

Latest packages of Arch Linux but without systemd as well as a simple installation procedure using the commandline. And if this trio of good reasons are not already enough, a helpful community with a dedicated and communicative lead developer.

Obarun has been my best Linux desktop experience so far.

Recommended (in my opinion) also for beginner users when they make sure to browse the provided how-to's on the wiki and forums (e.g. how to partition a harddisk for the installation procedure, how to add AUR repository, etc.).
