I use Nix for gaming, writing code, and general web browsing, so everything at this point. Great for configuration geeks and autists like me who want strict control over their environment and hate setting up installations manually over and over again. System configuration and home directories are configurable through a central config you work to create. Supports mixing unstable and stable packages if you need that. High initial learning curve but easy to jive with once you get it going. Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: unstable Rating: 10 Date: 2026-01-29 Votes: 2 If you love to write config, refuse to deal with messy config, /etc/ each nginx, Asinble, systemd, boot loader config, service and multiple servers with messy shell script, debug them endless forever with your whole life. Then this OS is for you, the one and only NixOS. Some may say it isn't as flexible as Gentoo or Arch. Actually, NixOS have a huge repo and a lot of fresh packages too. If you love compiling packages forever and want to report bug back Nix community just use flake, pin it to master and you are good to go. There are a lot of options in NixOS if you want to switch and rollback, it may have some limitation but that is where you have overlays What about custom your own software and patches? Use overlays and dive into those packages in nixpkgs, all your linux kernel, linux-firmware, all your software can be custom just like the way you want. No more bloat if you actually know how to. And don't bring systemd nonsense argument in here, you can bring your one if you know how to hack but it may require more time than you expect, there is community effort somewhere, help them if you want. Something went wrong? Rollback. Easy babe!!! If you need something to plug and play, click and easy to predict. You refuse to learn Nix, check NixOS documentations, NixOS packages, NixOS options, NixOS source code, asking people and doing homework. After all those thing and you can't get good, you can't create issue or pull request to contribute back to NixOS, you will be left behind. NixOS won't mercy people who can't get good and doesn't love their system and become one with it. Somehow, when I become one of their contributor, I become one with NixOS. NixOS is me and I am NixOS. It is also the most extensible distro I have ever used. NixOS ecosystem, while a bit cumbersome to learn, can be applied to basically any use-case. It can be used as a system config and dot-file manager, it can be used as a dev-env manager, and it can be used to isolate and test software (modding, quickly using a different application, etc.). Ultimately, it is the least beginner friendly, but only due to the onboarding required to understand how Nix’s ecosystem interacts with Linux’s existing ecosystem.
