DistroWatch.com: Nanolinux

Nanolinux

Last Update: 2018-03-24 02:03 UTC

Nanolinux is an open-source, free and very lightweight Linux distribution that requires only 14 MB of disk space. It includes tiny versions of the most common desktop applications and several games. It is based on the "MicroCore" edition of the Tiny Core Linux distribution. Nanolinux uses BusyBox, Nano-X instead of X.Org, FLTK 1.3.x as the default GUI toolkit, and the super-lightweight SLWM window manager. The included applications are mainly based on FLTK.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

What Nano lacks is development. The reason? It is based on assembly language. Or a least it used ti be. It is incredibly fast and light. The tow cons are; 1. There is no way ti install to HD and 2. There is no repo for ADSL programs.

I'm sorry, I can't get Nanolinux to boot from a stick - neither the 32 nor the 64 variety.

Perhaps the single biggest complaint that I may have with this is the lack of a built-in installer. For micro-distribution, I would have expected something for installing it to the hard drive. Even Basic Linux, which was two floppy disks, had an installer program. Regardless, if you are looking for a low resource version of Linux for use on a machine that is otherwise just gathering dust, this one works nicely. It loads quickly, and is quite capable for just being 18MB. I would think that upping the size by about a megabyte to include a basic install to hard drive would be a good idea. Otherwise, it is nice for what it is.
