Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Namib is a really good distro. Fairly similar to Manjaro but Namib updates are faster and it has a somewhat more refined Gnome desktop.

I like Namib. It’s new and needs a little refining, but it has a lot of potential. My concern for the developers is how they are going to differentiate themselves from Manjaro, Antergos and the other Arch-based distros (not to mention non-Arch distros).

I’m not a software developer but I’ve done some distro-hopping and I know a thing or two about marketing. I would like to humbly make two suggestions to the developers.
1. Narrow your focus to intermediate users. There are several distros targeting beginners or power users, but very few distros compete in the intermediate space. This would enable Namib to be positioned as a user-friendly “middle-weight” distro.
2. Be different. You can offer multiple desktop environments BUT you should specialize in one (other than KDE and Gnome)...possibly Budgie or Deepin. This would allow you to appeal to a distinct niche of users.

With a bit of focus and polish I believe Namib could quickly be considered an Arch-based alternative to popular distros such as MX-Linux, Solus, Deepin and PCLOS.

Namib is perfect for me as a Mate DE user. This desktop is a bit neglected by my old favourite distro, Manjaro but very nicely maintained by frederic2ec, the dev of Namib Gnu/Linux.

+ Namib seems to run a bit faster than Manjaro
+ Namib is pretty close to upstream, many updates
+ 6 desktop environments to choose from: Budgie, Cinnamon, Gnome, KDE, Mate, Xfce
+ downloads from Sourceforge and OSDN

- one-man-operation
- almost dead forum
