Over the years, starting years ago, I had tried Linux, several times, and ended up extremely disappointed each time. Linux Mint 18.3 was the 1st successful Linux setup for me. I actually have 3 laptops, from rather old to more recent, from different brands, from 2 to 8 Gb RAM. Installation of Mint was always easy and straightforward. It always resulted in a perfectly functional laptop. Setting the language to French was easy. I have successfully used Mint 18.3 with either Xfce or Cinnamon on all my laptops, the choice of the desktop depending on hardware performances only. I finally upgraded more recently to 19.1 (from scratch), then 19.2 (simple upgrade path), and found the upgrade very positive on all accounts: features, looks, performances... After a few months of experience with Mint, feeling more confident with Linux in general, I tried some 'distro hopping', just to be sure I would not be even better served with another choice. Well, it sometimes looked promising at first, but frustrating on other accounts, and sometimes a total failure. In the end, I still try other distributions for fun on one machine, but Mint 19 is definitely my stable/reference system (i.e. the one I trust for my precious data - photos, documents, etc). The utility to look for/install additional software is one of the best features of Mint in my opinion. It's really simple to use. Updates are very easy too, particularly with Mint 19.x. The desktop may be a bit old fashioned, but it's a good thing for new users, and you can customize it later. In my view, Cinnamon looks nicer, but Xfce is just as functional, and indeed very light on older computers. Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: 19.2 Rating: 10 Date: 2019-08-18 Votes: 24 Hands down the best distribution. I was impressed with Mint 17.3 and suffered through 19 and 19.1. The 19.2 version has fixed all of the problems that I was having and not getting answers on. Kudos to the Mint devel team. I've been a Linux user for over 15 years. The older I get, the less I want to fiddle wih things and just want it to work and be stable. That said, I do dabble in other distros to find the best that works for me.
