Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Mint 19.1 Tessa is exponentially better than Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. In the same hardware, there is a hell and a heaven of speed difference. Mint developers decide very wisely and it shows. Instead of going along with the flow of Ubuntu and supporting snaps, Mint went with Flatpak support instead and this is a boon. Finding flatpaks is very easy through the software center. Apps open very quickly, even on old hardware and system resource usage is quite low, although it does not match the KDE Plasma 5 level of low resource usage. Cinnamon does not do a lot of things but the things it does, it makes sure it does them very well. Mint is a benchmark of stability and reliability in the world of linux. It is a very dependable distribution for all my mission critical tasks. I might use Arch in my secondary spare machine when I feel adventurous, but whenever I have to get some work done, when my work is more important than system maintenance and thinking about the distribution, I look no more than Mint. It is the only distribution that I rely on. There have been many distros out there which are based upon "one man's vision" and suddenly the one man goes away and the distro becomes orphaned. I avoid using such distros and stick to the ones which are meant to last. Mint is one of them. It is not just another distro with a theme slapped in. It has the best hardware compatibility that I have seen in Linux.

I've been a Linux Mint user for 2 or 3 years (I'm getting older and my memory is not so good!). It's my first Linux distro, so I cannot compare to other versions of Linux but I can certainly say that it blows the socks off of Windows! :-)

I installed Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon on my primary home desktop PC, a 2014ish vintage Dell XPS 8700, a couple of years ago after a hard disk crash. It took me a couple of tries to figure out the partitioning but it's been rock solid ever since.

I have also installed Linux Mint (xfce) on my wife's 10+ year old laptop. After years of endless problems with the OEM Windows XP install, it is now a breeze to support the machine. For a friend who wanted a low-cost guest computer, I picked up a second-hand SFF desktop, added an SSD and USB 3 card and installed Linux Mint 19.1 (xfce).

What continues to astound me is how easy-to-use and problem free Linux Mint it is. I have yet to run into a problem that was not of my own making and have always managed to find any applications that I needed. Most recently I discovered Heimdall and ADP tools for customizing Android phones. Totally cool.

I am not a coder or true hacker but rather a fairly advanced user (prosumer?) - a retired software tech manager, with broad exposure to a variety of operating systems and applications but fairly limited hands-on experience [those who can't do manage?] Nonetheless, I have found Linux Mint installation and administration to be very straightforward and easy to use. Both the xfce and Cinnamon desktops are very clean, aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. The built in application set and those available via the Software Manager and other installation tools have enabled me to do anything I've wanted to. And, finally, the performance and stability are excellent. The only reason I'm giving it a 9/10 is that I haven't compared to any other Linux distros, so I want to leave room for improvement ! :-)

The ideal distro for those who want to leave Windows and get to Linux. It is fast, stable, customizable, all the programs I installed work very well. In addition it does not abuse the consumption of resources.
There are many aids, apart from the existence of a manual. On the other hand, the presentation introduces you to the necessary steps to start using Linux Mint.
The only two but I found were the following:
1. There is no introduction for newcomers from the Windows world, which explains the differences and equivalences between the two operating systems.
2. Wine is not present in the Software Store, as it happened in version 18.3. Wine is important for beginners because it allows to install Windows programs in Linux. I had to do it through the terminal, which can discourage novices.
All of the above seems necessary for a distribution that prides itself on being a valid alternative to Windows.
In spite of it I am enchanted with Linux Mint, I come using it from the Rafaela version. If I decanté in the wonderful world of Gnu Linux was thanks to her, because it has everything that Ubuntu lacks.
Congratulations to the developers.
