Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Lite makes Linux super-friendly for new Linux users. Thankfully it is light but not so light that the user has a lot of work to do after installation.

XFCE
version 4.4
4.15 kernel
zero swap file (I have 32GB of RAM)

One of the better looking distros, made even prettier with Faenza-Dark (Cupertino) Blue (Dark Panels) icons, Black Mate theme style, BiSoft-GTK3 window style and EXO 2 fonts. (I like a dark theme and Mac like window buttons.)

Pros:
Based on Ubuntu LTS.
Ubuntu repositories
Linux Lite utilites
Synaptics Package Manager
Desktop documentation linked to their web page.

(Don't be surprised if you end up searching for, and downloading, previous Linux Lite released wallpapers.)

XFCE is made for the desktop. It's clean, simple, reliable, stable. It has some window effects but no rotating cubes or wobbly windows, for example. But if your hardware supports Compositing you can adjust opacity and translucency.

Cons:
systemd
hardwired control panel icons
terminal prompt
limited choice of browsers, so you will need to resort to manually installing some browsers

Latest kernels with Spectre and Meltdown fixes will most likely slow down the desktop responsiveness. So, for example, YouTube video playback may start to buffer where there was no buffering before with the 4.15 kernel. Program loading will also be slower.

Can't install other DEs, Desktop Environments, alongside XFCE, so I don't know if you can replace Thunar file manager with Nemo, from Cinnamon, for example, as it may pull in Cinnamon dependencies.

-----------

If you're new to XFCE you will probably want to browse for "XFCE tweaks and tips".

When I saw its name, I thought it would be a light and fast Linux configuration to carry around in a USB flash memory. Was I wrong! The "lite" on its name refers to the amount of programs packed into its ISO file, not how much resources it requires to run. Of course, if I was going to use this on any random computer, I had to test it on the worst case available at home: my Acer Aspire One netbook with intel ATOM for CPU. Bootstrapping not always worked, some times it just hung during loading, When it didn't hang, it took Linux Lite about fifteen minutes to start up. After loaded, the system felt sluggish, mainly when loading the heavier applications, like LibreOffice. If it's slower than M$ Windows, then it's off my list!
