Linux Lite is a beginner-friendly Linux distribution based on Ubuntu's long-term support (LTS) release and featuring the Xfce desktop. Linux Lite primarily targets Windows users. It aims to provide a complete set of applications to assist users with their everyday computing needs, including a full office suite, media players and other essential daily software.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Colour scheme:green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

You always remember your first and for me it was Lite. Had a great time and eventually branched out, but fondly remembered learning Linux on Lite. Just one thing... it's 2026 and I feel with the mass adoption of Linux due to Microsoft failures, broad software options should be up front and easy for newer folks. I'm not here to start a fight, but Flatpak should be a quick toggle on or off for every distro. (Vanilla Ubuntu notwithstanding) Yes, it's easy to install and no, don't need to copy what everyone else is doing (no fun in that!) it just seems like not having it as an option by default is a bit weird these days. Besides that ONE thing, Linux Lite has been fantastic, simple, and a wonderful ride over the years. Haven't gone too deep on 8.0 rc , but playing around with it on a mini system with a modest N150 was perfectly fine and snappy. Kudos to the Lite team for such a clean, relaxing, Linux journey. Thank you!

I have been using Linux Lite for a long time, and my impressions are incredibly positive. It’s clear that a massive amount of effort has been invested into this system, which I deeply appreciate.
Looking 'under the hood,' it's evident that the developers have paid great attention to detail, especially regarding dependencies and overall system architecture. As a user who prioritizes perfection and stability, I prefer using Systemback over Timeshift for my backups. On Linux Lite, Systemback works flawlessly, and I was particularly impressed to see that the common issues surrounding the casper service have been properly resolved.
I consider myself a demanding 'average' user who values a rock-solid foundation. The work done here is excellent, though there is always room for even more fine-tuning—and I look forward to seeing how the system evolves. Truly a job well done.
I have recently tried this distro in order to restore some laptops/PC with an old hardware and the overall result was quite successful: first of all, apart from the booting slowness, the installation was quite simple by using the Ubiquity system such as Ubuntu and the RAM consumption by idle was between 500 and 600 MB which is a good item, in my opinion, for being a XFCE DE distro!
Besides, the UI was smooth and elegant at the same time and the installed applications were really good. Another pro was the ease to use and the simplicity to install Flatpak and some basic applications (such as Firefox, Ubuntu-restricted-extras and much more) in a really simple way by using Lite Software along with some interesting Lite features (for example Lite Upgrade) which make Linux Lite a quite pretty OS to use!
