Linux From Scratch

Last Update: 2020-07-07 10:43 UTC

Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with the steps necessary to build your own custom Linux system. There are a lot of reasons why somebody would want to install an LFS system. The question most people raise is "why go through all the hassle of manually installing a Linux system from scratch when you can just download an existing distribution like Debian or Redhat". That is a valid question which I hope to answer for you. The most important reason for LFS's existence is teaching people how a Linux system works internally. Building an LFS system teaches you about all that makes Linux tick, how things work together, and depend on each other. And most importantly, how to customize it to your own taste and needs.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

LFS goes one step further from Arch, Gentoo or Slackware, as you're completely building from scratch. Even the shell must be set up using a host system. So yes, it's extremely long and tough.

But, LFS gives you unrivalled customisation whilst giving you a step-by-step guide to follow, so it's not too tough. Since you're doing it by hand, you're free to add your own packages or versions for your distro. And I say YOUR distro - it's not an Arch installation or something like that. By the end of it, you'll have a distribution you created, and it's ready to share with others (hopefully).

Add some experience in C/C++, Python, and you'll be able to extend and improve your distribution.

If you want easy, stick with Ubuntu or Mint (for example). But if you want the pride of building your very own distro your way, LFS is the way to go. It will put those "BTW I use Arch" guys in their place.

One thing to improve - maybe make the guide easier to read. Add colour, spread it out.

I am free to maintain this system as I see fit, no faceless admins - I have complete and total control, I can choose my own destiny with this distro, and keep package versions how I want, and disable and enable the features I WANT.

Very fast and stable. I learned a lot until the build process (... and time).

Thx for this Distro, the helpfull explanations and the growth in "understanding *nix" during the use of the system. The inclusion of LibreSSL and Clang compiler in the base system would be nice too.

Best wishes ...
