Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

KXStudio is the best GNU/Linux pro audio set-up I've used. After struggling to get set-up Ardour, JACK, etc running smoothly on a more general purpose distro, I decided just to install KXStudio on a separate partition. Everything worked perfectly out of the box. I cannot recommend it enough.

It comes with such a wealth of audio software that there are still plenty of synths and plug-ins I probably have yet to discover. Highly recommended!!

The first AV distro that worked for me out of the box with all my hardware.

Usual slick Ubuntu install from USB. I run this distro on all types of laptops, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, runs fine with all hardware as expected. Jack runs from boot and Cadence is a nice JACK front end.

Really enjoying this distro. I use the distro itself as my DAW. Am about to start using it in live gigs so we'll soon find out how robust it is!

The patchbay becomes the centre of my activity, using this I can route all audio through a virtual mixer with as many channels as I need, all individually routed. I can send any of these channels to the effects racks.

I can use eternal hardware MIDI keyboards (via interface or direct USB) or virtual JACK/MIDI keyboards or even emulated models like a Jupiter 8 or a DX1.

Any number of these inputs are also routed through the Arpegiators.

There are also guitar effects emulators that I can use on my real electric guitar via audio input (a Scarlett interface)

The drum machine ties it all together thru JACK and MIDI that clocks everything together internally, and potentially (something I haven't tried yet) with our hardware clocks as well.

All of this directly out of the box.

Once you get a basic grasp of JACK and patching, you are flying and there seems no limit to what you can do without having to install anything at all.

I am currently using a Lenovo Flexpad and planning on adding the laptop to our live setup with KXStudio.

I also use KXStudio for video editing.

Rough edges, but this distro delivers a good-to-great low-latency kernel experience, just what we need for audio.

Pushes some good front end programs that start with the letter C (Cadence, Carla) but does not install qjackctl by default. Use "sudo apt-get install qjackctl" to fix that, then run it and select your audio i/o device. All done.

Really nice KDE audio distro, BIG thanks to the developers!
