Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

After cycling through Ubuntu LTS, Fedora Silverblue and Fedora (both with GNOME), Kubuntu.... I tried out KDE neon. I'm not looking back. There have been much fewer quirks/gltches than with Kubuntu/etc., and the only "downside" (although it is the exact opposite from my perspective) is that other distros will come pre-loaded a bunch more apps. I'd rather have a limited set and grow from there, though, so I'm only bloating the OS with packages I prefer (but KDE's integration with Google Drive is a godsend). I plan on sticking to KDE neon from here on out. Looks better and better performance than GNOME. Can't go wrong.

Might be great on a physical machine, but there is an infuriating problem right now running it in VMWare Workstation. Modifying the screen resolution changes it for about one second before reverting back to 800x600, even if going to xrandr through the Konsole. Since many windows are larger than 800x600 not only do you have to slide them around to do anything, but some buttons (often cancel/save) are just straight up inaccessible unless you tab to them and take a lucky guess. They should make the default screen resolution large enough to fit your install box and all your settings boxes, but more importantly they should resolve this issue of being unable to adjust the resolution. I am scared to throw it on a machine as I don't know if the bug will persist in a physical environment.

I give it 5 anyway as it seems very configurable and has a good feel to it despite the bug with the display.

The best desktop environment I've used since I started working with Linux 20+ years ago.

KDE Neon is stable, fast and just plain reliable. As of 08/26/20 I'm running bleeding edge 5.16.04, frameworks 5.61.0 and Qt, 5.12.3 without any issues. KDE gets better and faster with each new release and I don't see me switching to another DE.

Switch to KDE Neon you will not be disappointed at all.
