Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Maybe good for hacking code, but sucks as an OS.
Nothing but problems OTB.
Not for average Linux user.
Average software that comes with Distros is either not present or simply does not work!
The worst Distro I have ever tested/used! ( I have tested /used Antergos Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Centos, Manjaro, and Debian - I am going back to Antergos!)

I'm using Kali Linux in a VM for penetration testing, natively with the Reason Kernel on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and Zero W, as well as natively on a GPD pocket.
The VM is doing what it is supposed to do: it's hacking along nicely and it is rock solid. It comes with the minimum set of applications installed but I just had to install "kali-linux-full" as well as libre office and I was all set to do my work.
The Raspbery Pi is an entirely different kettle of fish - it blows Raspbian out of the water. The Re4son Kernel supports most tft screens and there is a touch screen friendly penetration testing interface called "Sticky Fingers" available. It is rock solid and the support is second to none.

Kali supports the GPD pocket better than any other OS, including the official Ubuntu image. I don't know why but it seems that Kali is on some platforms a better general purpose OS than most of the others although being designed for a niche penetration testing market.

One tip: create an unprivileged user account after installation. As a penetration testing platform, it requires root login to run most tools and they don't run well under sudo but, becoming more and more popular for general purpose work like writing reports or reading e-mails, an unprivileged user for the non testing tasks is recommended.
