Gentoo. If you want to put in some work and really learn stuff, then use Gentoo. Gentoo has a long list of required reading. But once you do it. You're in for a ride. When you reduce a Linux distribution down to its core, it's really just a package manager. And Portage is the best package manager around by a longshot. You really don't know you need it until you know why other package managers fall short. Portage will keep track of everything you've installed manually (shocked this is not the case with something like apt or dnf, they just have a giant list of everything installed, dependencies included), protect your configuration files under etc, allow you to mix and match stable and testing on a per-package base, let you strip out unneeded functionality via USE flags. You name it. It seems like Portage has it all. The only thing I could want more out of it is more speed. But it's a tradeoff I am willing to make. EBuilds. Ebuilds man. They are the best way to install software ever. The transparency they provide, even when installing a binary (they're built with the Ebuild anyway), is unmatched. What dependencies does a package have? Check the Ebuild. What does it install. Ebuild. Where is upstream. Ebuild. What patches are made. Ebuild. Can I add my own patches? Yes you can! Can I make my own Ebuild for software not in the main repos? Yes you can? Can it install propreitary software without third party tools? Yes it can! Gentoo has the coolest hybrid system of installing from source by default, but allowing binary packages. I have it set up to install binaries when available from the binhost (saves time), then to compile if no binary matches what I am asking for. This is amazing because you only compile when compiling makes sense (add or remove functionality, patches, etc.). On top of all of this, Gentoo has been so bug free for me its crazy. Never would have thought. They are a rolling release but nothing goes stable until it's been well tested. And this simple approach works so well. And even if a bug came long, I could downgrade so easily compared to other distros which don't support partial downgrades/upgrades. The ONLY downside to Gentoo in my opinion, is that some packages seem to lack maintainers sometimes. But that is a problem I can help solve. I can try and update the Ebuild myself, then contribute my changes! And I can support Gentoo in every way I can to get it the help it needs to continue supporting this awesome project. Very stable, high level of configuration possible (or simple if you want). Compilation allows you to optimise your system, reduce number of packages and improve security. I remember heartbleed (big historic CVE): I have neved compiled the support, I was not concerned by it. Gentoo allows you to understand how GNU/Linux system is working. I used Debian, Ubuntu or others in the past (and currently with WSL). But I am not as satisfied as with Gentoo. Recently, bin packages have been improved for users with small configuration (or just do not want to compile so much things). But that’s only half the story. The advantages of a system compiled from source to your exact needs are well-documented in literature and user reports. However, I want to highlight what Portage can do even when used purely as a binary package manager—just like most other distributions. Portage has evolved into a hybrid powerhouse. Even when used exclusively as a binary package manager, it can outperform traditional systems like apt (Debian/Ubuntu), dnf (Fedora), or pacman (Arch) in terms of long-term stability and efficient hardware utilization. Slotting: Portage supports slots. It can keep multiple versions of the same software or library installed simultaneously if other programs require them. During major updates, Portage also separates dependencies across versions instead of blindly overwriting them. Binary Package Metadata Awareness: A binary package in, say, Debian is "rigid." Portage, however, checks whether the compiled-in features (USE flags) match your system settings. It prevents inconsistent states and may even alert you before installation to avoid system crashes. The Hybrid Approach as a Safety Net: Imagine a program missing in the binary repository for your architecture. With Portage, you can simply instruct it: "Install everything as binary, except this one package—I’ll compile it from source." You’re never stuck. The ability to seamlessly switch between binary and source ensures you get security updates immediately, even if the binary repository isn’t up to date yet. Deep Dependency Tracking & World File: Traditional package managers tend to accumulate orphaned packages over the years—unused software that clutters the system or causes conflicts. Portage strictly distinguishes between what you want (World file) and what the system needs. With emerge --depclean, Portage radically removes anything no longer required, but only if the dependency chain is absolutely secure. Your system stays as clean after years as it was on day one. "Software rot" is actively prevented. Configuration Protection: Portage never overwrites your existing configuration files. Instead, it parks them in a queue. You use tools like dispatch-conf or etc-update to compare and evaluate changes. You retain full control over your system settings, without automated updates destroying your custom configurations. So why install anything other than Gentoo Linux? The answer is: you don’t get it for free! The installation effort is substantial, and maintenance requires not just time but also expertise.
