Here are some loose thoughts strung together to make a "review". The pitch of gentoo is that it isn't quite a linux distro but instead a "meta distro" in that instead of being a operating system with preset packages and default configs like archlinux, it is almost completely configured by you using gentoo tools. You can install obs and instead of getting the version of obs that the arch team configured you get a custom obs package configured with custom "use flags" which enable or disable features at compile time, this means you can reduce a program to just what you need or enable every single obscure option your heart desires. You can also mix and match unstable and stable packages without issue due to the compilation nature of the distro so any binary incompatibilities are worked around. The downside of the ultra customization distro is that the install process is a mixed bag due to front loading most of the customization upfront, you have to follow the handbook and use a terminal to run commands that set up a root filesystem yourself and configure it with the help of the handbook till you end up with a functional system you can reboot into. This isn't terrible since it teaches and eases you into the operation of gentoo and portage, and now you have a good idea of how to fix a broken gentoo system since you now know how its put together, and means the system is configured on every level to your liking. However this is time consuming and requires a lot of processing power from both your system and your brain, it can be quite tasking your first time, It also requires a willingness to learn that a lot of people don't have. Despite or maybe even because of the install process being a lot upfront, the actual maintenance once you have a working system is some of the easiest I've had the joy of working with, emerge error? The error is almost always human readable and will most often tell you the recommended ways to fix the issue. I've barely had to configure my system after setting it up for the first time, I just install new software and configure use flags to fix emerge conficts on new updates and its all smooth sailing. Software support is a little mixed, the main gentoo repo has tons of packages although a lot of them are old and obscure due to gentoo being over 20 years old, It is missing a lot of gaming utilities and wayland software which means if you want to use ether of those you have to add more repositories, the process of making or using repositories is relatively simple at least although I have ended up using 9 which feels like to much and having a lot of common software like steam, fuzzel, mangohud and retroarch only available in user repo's is not ideal due to both adding to the upfront setup cost of gentoo and relying on user packages of unknown quaility. Overall I like gentoo and will probably use it for a long long time, although I have some gripes and I wish I could actually get my friends to try it. Was this review helpful? My love affair with this diamond among lesser gems (and other diamonds, of course) is multi-faceted, but the most important "feature" it has is the fact that you can basically build it any way you want. LFS (Linux from Scratch) is a beautiful system, and possibly the closest thing to Gentoo in terms of purpose, deployment and "type". But just as LFS is like the Rolls-Royce of "build-your-own" distributions Gentoo is the high-powered Lamborghini equivalent. Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: stable Rating: 10 Date: 2026-01-22 Votes: 5 Gentoo has been my choice of distro for over a year and I have been very impressed with the amount of customization and choice. Portage (the package manager) has various features to help create the distro of your choice, as well as helping with diagnosing issues during an emerge (Portage terminal interface) making the issues clear and breakage free. A favorite feature of mine is USE flags, USE flags can be used to fine tune your system to your needs, don't use Bluetooth? Well you can either do it per package through package.use or make it system wide through the make.conf file. A few tips I would give to new or interested users are, - Stick to the Gentoo handbook, the popular installations on YouTube are outdated, I followed a video during my first install and it missed important parts (initramfs) causing my system to be unstable. - gentoolkit is a great utility to help keep your system clean of old packages, an eclean-dist -dp to view the old packages and followed with deletion with eclean-dist -d will help you storage wise. - If you don't want to update frequently make sure to check in with Gentoo Linux Security Advisories (GSLA) to see if you are vulnerable to any attacks. A glsa-check --test all will check the system for vulnerabilities followed by a glsa-check -f $(glsa-check -t all) to update those packages to a safe version.
