But that’s only half the story. The advantages of a system compiled from source to your exact needs are well-documented in literature and user reports. However, I want to highlight what Portage can do even when used purely as a binary package manager—just like most other distributions. Portage has evolved into a hybrid powerhouse. Even when used exclusively as a binary package manager, it can outperform traditional systems like apt (Debian/Ubuntu), dnf (Fedora), or pacman (Arch) in terms of long-term stability and efficient hardware utilization. Slotting: Portage supports slots. It can keep multiple versions of the same software or library installed simultaneously if other programs require them. During major updates, Portage also separates dependencies across versions instead of blindly overwriting them. Binary Package Metadata Awareness: A binary package in, say, Debian is "rigid." Portage, however, checks whether the compiled-in features (USE flags) match your system settings. It prevents inconsistent states and may even alert you before installation to avoid system crashes. The Hybrid Approach as a Safety Net: Imagine a program missing in the binary repository for your architecture. With Portage, you can simply instruct it: "Install everything as binary, except this one package—I’ll compile it from source." You’re never stuck. The ability to seamlessly switch between binary and source ensures you get security updates immediately, even if the binary repository isn’t up to date yet. Deep Dependency Tracking & World File: Traditional package managers tend to accumulate orphaned packages over the years—unused software that clutters the system or causes conflicts. Portage strictly distinguishes between what you want (World file) and what the system needs. With emerge --depclean, Portage radically removes anything no longer required, but only if the dependency chain is absolutely secure. Your system stays as clean after years as it was on day one. "Software rot" is actively prevented. Configuration Protection: Portage never overwrites your existing configuration files. Instead, it parks them in a queue. You use tools like dispatch-conf or etc-update to compare and evaluate changes. You retain full control over your system settings, without automated updates destroying your custom configurations. So why install anything other than Gentoo Linux? The answer is: you don’t get it for free! The installation effort is substantial, and maintenance requires not just time but also expertise. Yes No Version: stable Rating: 9 Date: 2026-03-13 Country: Denmark Votes: 5 For me, Gentoo is the best choice, because it not only offers a huge amount of control but also provides handy tools (portage, emerge, eselect, etc.) to make things easier for me. I ran Gentoo for about a year in 2005, but then switched to a binary distribution (Debian) because I had a single-core AMD Athlon 64 with very little RAM at the time, and installing new updates sometimes took days. In 2025, I took another look at Gentoo. Since I now have an AMD Ryzen 9 with plenty of RAM, compile times have been drastically reduced, and guess what? It just clicked with me again. It wasn’t until I reinstalled it that I realized how much I had missed this level of control over my system. Gentoo isn’t as hard to install as some people would have you believe. The Handbook is great, and if you can read and follow instructions, you’ll be up and running in "no time" (depending on your CPU and RAM). Was this review helpful? Here are some loose thoughts strung together to make a "review". The pitch of gentoo is that it isn't quite a linux distro but instead a "meta distro" in that instead of being a operating system with preset packages and default configs like archlinux, it is almost completely configured by you using gentoo tools. You can install obs and instead of getting the version of obs that the arch team configured you get a custom obs package configured with custom "use flags" which enable or disable features at compile time, this means you can reduce a program to just what you need or enable every single obscure option your heart desires. You can also mix and match unstable and stable packages without issue due to the compilation nature of the distro so any binary incompatibilities are worked around. The downside of the ultra customization distro is that the install process is a mixed bag due to front loading most of the customization upfront, you have to follow the handbook and use a terminal to run commands that set up a root filesystem yourself and configure it with the help of the handbook till you end up with a functional system you can reboot into. This isn't terrible since it teaches and eases you into the operation of gentoo and portage, and now you have a good idea of how to fix a broken gentoo system since you now know how its put together, and means the system is configured on every level to your liking. However this is time consuming and requires a lot of processing power from both your system and your brain, it can be quite tasking your first time, It also requires a willingness to learn that a lot of people don't have. Despite or maybe even because of the install process being a lot upfront, the actual maintenance once you have a working system is some of the easiest I've had the joy of working with, emerge error? The error is almost always human readable and will most often tell you the recommended ways to fix the issue. I've barely had to configure my system after setting it up for the first time, I just install new software and configure use flags to fix emerge conficts on new updates and its all smooth sailing. Software support is a little mixed, the main gentoo repo has tons of packages although a lot of them are old and obscure due to gentoo being over 20 years old, It is missing a lot of gaming utilities and wayland software which means if you want to use ether of those you have to add more repositories, the process of making or using repositories is relatively simple at least although I have ended up using 9 which feels like to much and having a lot of common software like steam, fuzzel, mangohud and retroarch only available in user repo's is not ideal due to both adding to the upfront setup cost of gentoo and relying on user packages of unknown quaility. Overall I like gentoo and will probably use it for a long long time, although I have some gripes and I wish I could actually get my friends to try it. Was this review helpful?
