GeckoLinux

Last Update: 2019-04-11 06:22 UTC

GeckoLinux is a Linux spin based on the openSUSE distribution, with a focus on polish and out-of-the-box usability on the desktop. The distribution features many desktop editions which can be installed from live discs. Some patent encumbered open source software is included in GeckoLinux which is not available in the default installation of openSUSE. Special attention has been given to the quality of the font rendering. GeckoLinux provides two main editions, Static (which is based on openSUSE Leap) and Rolling (based on openSUSE Tumbleweed).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I used Leap 15.1 and Tumbleweed and I had a number of glitches crop up, especially with Firefox. I tried GeckoLinux as a last resort (Gnome, Rolling) and now everything is good. It basically came with a lot of the stuff I would have added to OpenSUSE (Codecs, 32 bit drivers, etc). I obviously screwed this up when I did it myself, Geckolinux seems a little faster as well.

I'll be trying it on my laptop next.

For the life of me, I've been trying to find another DE to boot on the computer with the GNOME leap 15 version of Gecko, just for variety and extra tools. Everything else is just a poor show on stability, and overall performance. I would like to see better access to installing a few more extensions in this distro, such as- places, and dash to panel, just to mix the environment up a little when in the mood. It even opens my Samsung 128Gb camera card formatted in Lumix camera to fat32, many other distros won't recognize Fat32 on that card (Debian seems to be the exception). I'm running an Intel core I5-6200u @2.3GHz *4, Intel HD graphics 520 (Skylake GT2) in a HP laptop. On the same machine I found the KDE Plasma- Leap version would get a bit locked up with multiple windows/ processes open, that might be a KDE thing though, as GNOME seems much faster and more stable (GNOME 3.26.2).

I was using openSUSE Leap 15 for about 6 months without issues other than a slow boot. I then decided to give Tumbleweed a try, it also ran without issues, but the boot was even slower. So back to Leap I went... BUT this time I tried Gecko. I don't know if it's because it installed using EXT4 (without snapper) instead of BTRFS (and all the related moving parts) or because of Geckos tweaks to the system, but the boot up is now waaay faster. Even though I don't have the security of rollbacks anymore, openSUSE Leap is so stable, it really isn't needed. As a bonus, the fonts are crisper and there is much less bloat just as advertised. It was also much easier and faster to install & setup as Packman, CODECS and additional repositories were ready to go. I Just added some of my favorite apps, customized it to my liking and in less than an hour, I was all set. Great job by the developer and I highly recommend GeckoLinux to anyone who wants to give the lizard a try.
