As a part-time user of the 32bit version I was curious, of course, how the 64bit Elive would compare. I downloaded it, burned a DVD and tried it on my desktop computer which I use for work.
I do not have the time at the moment to look into everything right now, but the first impression is:
The system is stable, although alpha state, it is fast, and everything works right out of the box - very important for the impatient ones...
With everything I mean (just for clarification) that all the really important things like internet, printing, screen resolution, input, sound, video. I did not do anything which may need more specific configuration or tweaks, but with such an entrance on 'stage' of Elive 64bit I would not expect a lot of difficulty.
The desktop has very, very many options for individual configuration. Everyone who would like to take the trouble should be able to set up the perfect personalized configuration.
Elive also already comes with a very good selection of software preinstalled covering many usual needs, so you can just start working.
The desktop looks beautiful and gives a well-thought-out overall impression.
In other words: this new version of Elive looks utterly promising, and if a stable version will be available, I would consider switching to it as my everyday working environment.
Keep up the brilliant work, I will follow the development with interest.
Very light..incredibly easy to install. Finally a 64 bit version..Everything works..from netflix to webcams..5.1 channel sound..it all works..It works SO well I made a donation. Having used several earlier versions(2._ and 3._) .this is awesome.
A NEW COMPETITOR IN THE TOWN!!
Since yesterday Elive was out of contention: it was built with old sw.
Now things are changed dramatically.
Main goals of Elive are:
1. to be beautiful
2. to revive old pc
For sure Elive is not only beautiful, more than Elementary OS, but it is also far more easier to be handled than its main competitor in the "beauty contest".
Revive old pc.
It is true.
I am writing these comments from a Compaq Presario R3000 dated 2003 (64 bit) with Elive 32 bit - 1230 Mram.
After installation, after the boot it occupies 260 Mram.
I can see video on youtube with no issues.
In the "revive-old-pc contest" it is n° 3 after Q4OS and Antix, before all the *buntus and derivates (after the 18.04 they are out of contest) and better than Slitaz and Tiny Core, that have other big problems also if they use less memory.
I tried an install on a Macbook pro early 2008 with no success.
On more modern pc at the moment I didnt found any problem.
THE NEXT DEVELOPMENTS
I read that the in the next future the DE will be changed with Gnome.
This is a bit surprising, because the whole system will be heavier and wont fit on old HW anymore.
In reality all what I need works perfectly OOTB and I need no tweaks because it is so beautifull
