Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I like it. Despite it looking like a mac. :-)

There are only a few customizations I needed - like being able to have files on my desktop. Getting there was not bad. Everything else, I took out the box. My vpn to work just worked. And I like - IT WORKED. It handled the NVIDIA drivers without me having to worry about them. Prime, just worked., I can switch between the intel driver and nvidia drivers with just a click and a log out. The 4k scaling worked well out of the box. I didn't have to do anything to get the UI readable on the 4k laptop. I have to figure out how to make the Citrix workstation to accept my companies certs, but I think that is a Citrix thing and not Elementary OS thing.

I do not like the idea of having to reinstall to get a new version of the OS. So when 5.1 comes out, I will have to just reinstall. That I am just about sick of, and I've only had to do it twice. So what should have been a 10 for the experience, turned to an 8 because an upgrade option would be nice.

I've been a Mac user since 1998. One of my old machines could not run an OS beyond 10.7.5, so I installed ElementaryOS on it and gave it to my 10yr old son. To him it feels very much like a Mac, has features which are not available in MacOS 10.7.5, has a wealth of free software which he loves digging through, and exposes him to Linux. It is very stable - not a single crash in 3 months since I setup - which means that I don't have to keep trouble shooting for him.

Thoroughly recommended as an operating system (although I still love my MacOS)

I have been using elementary OS Freya for 3 years as my main operating sytem and I love it. I would keep using it, if it was still getting security updates. Elementary OS Juno? No. I installed Juno and I have been trying for a week to get the bugs out of it. It's just not worth all that effort. Freya is much cleaner looking than either Loki or Juno. Sometimes new and "improved" is not better. I will keep using Freya as long as possible and then probably switch to a different distro. Maybe the next version of elementary OS will be an improvement over Freya.
