CentOS as a group is a community of open source contributors and users. Typical CentOS users are organisations and individuals that do not need strong commercial support in order to achieve successful operation. CentOS is 100% compatible rebuild of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution requirements. CentOS is for people who need an enterprise class operating system stability without the cost of certification and support.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Perfect OS for any production environment. From POS to virtualization hypervisors. Perfect for software development as it's really stable. It's 3.10 kernel is both up to date security wise and stable enough.

Really not much to say. It's RHEL without the price tag, what's more to ask?

One wouldn't play around installing stuff and such on the desktop unless he/she has to in an OS. Unfortunately, OS like Centos will likely make you to hunt for software you need and occasionally enforce you to install new versions of a software that is already installed in your hard disk. One example being ghostscript in my experience.

Centos is not a production OS in that it will interfere your workflow for various reasons, and you will not necessarily obtain a modern OS like tumbleweed as a result of these interferences. You can skip Centos if you're looking for an os that doesn't stand in your way.

Who would like Centos? Obviously, system administrators, especially if you're Redhat certified. Another would be that you're a fan of security related software like Selinux, firewall that comes default with Redhat based distributions. Other than that I don't see any scenarios for favouring this OS.

There are better enterprise linux distros than Redhat/Centos/Scientfic these days. SLES comes to my mind, if you're willing to pay. Otherwise, Opensuse Leap, Debian, Ubuntu are all good to use.

This is OS for work, for a very stable and reliable environment, not for playing around installing stuff on the desktop. On other hand, for those who understand how, it is also possible to tune it up as a great desktop OS. ***** In both cases it is Rock Solid *****
