CentOS as a group is a community of open source contributors and users. Typical CentOS users are organisations and individuals that do not need strong commercial support in order to achieve successful operation. CentOS is 100% compatible rebuild of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution requirements. CentOS is for people who need an enterprise class operating system stability without the cost of certification and support.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I consider CentOS the best distribution for Server Use! It is stable, secure and lightweight. I also use it on my desktop and laptop, and it does the job really well.

CentOS and Red Hat is the absolute standard in Enterprise, and thus you have a solid distro with up to 10 (ten) years of support and security updates.

Use it and you will not regret it!

I use Linux since 2007, but I never had the "guts" any of the Red Hat related distros, be it RHEL, Fedora or CentOS. I only used Ubuntu, Debian and openSUSE. This until last month, when I decided to use CentOS on my server at home and also to deploy it on my VPS that was using Debian.
I find yum much better implemented than apt/apt-get. This could be my only server solution from now on.

- is extremely stable
- highly secure
- has quite recent packages (version 7.4 or 7-1708)
- works on my hp dekstop from 2009
- works on my raspberry pi 3 model B
- works on my Intel NUC from 2017
- works on my HP Probook 430 G5 from 2017

- kernel version 3.10, but nevertheless stable and has all the needed drivers

Try CentOS on your systems, be it Desktop/Laptop/Server. I am sure you will have a great experience.

Run this OS on nearly all our servers at work Hardware and VM. Love the OS, love the folder structure, config structure, way more then the Debian Distro's.
(but that is a personal opinion.

At Home i have only 1 server, running on this same version but with an elrepo based kernel update to a newer version (4.14 something). As this build in version is ok and fine, but at home had newer hardware that was not fully functioning properly on the 3.10 kernel.

That is also my only note of attention. As there are newer LongTerm supported kernel versions (4.4 for example), especially when the OS has a minor version update (7.3 --> 7.4) this would have been nice to also have a newer LT kernel.
