CentOS as a group is a community of open source contributors and users which started in 2003 and has been sponsored by Red Hat since 2014. CentOS Linux versions up to CentOS Linux 8 are 100% compatible rebuilds of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution requirements. In 2020 it was announced CentOS Linux is being discontinued and replaced with CentOS Stream, a developer-focused distribution which acts as a middle-stream between Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Colour scheme:green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Everything works, perfect compatibility with thinkpads, hp, acer. Solid OS with new kernel where everything works, supported until 2030.... No complains here, ssd encryption works, no ram spikes, no issues, updates run smoothly. RPM distribution between redhat and fedora that allows you to add all repos you need unlike alma or red hat, so I can only say give Cent OS Stream 10 a try, customize it if you want, it will be easy, selinux is a bit of an annoyance but it can be adjusted from terminal.
Running it with Docker, Portainer as a Plex Media Server works well I must say. Very stable ! CentOs is great for my custom setup. Must say this is not a beginners distro. Set it up to what you need be it a web server media server file server. I have done the same with Rockey 9 also rock solid ! There is alot of learning to do if you want to use this OS. I'm happy with it so far as I'm also using Unbuntu Server for the same reasons.... REDHAT at it's best ! please use 500 characters come one dude what else can I say to make you happy....
I like CentOS Stream 9; I find it very stable. I have both a server and a laptop running this system, and it seems rock solid. I arrived here after 20 years of using Debian.
I don't like that the ISO is 12 GB to download. The GNOME version is 40.4.0 at this time, and the kernel is 5.14.0-480.el9.x86_64.
There is detailed information available on more complex configurations. It's a pity that the community has fragmented, but I don’t believe migrating to Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux is necessary.
The experience is absolutely interesting; it handles a Zabbix server, Nagios, a few ticketing systems, and a website without any issues. I haven’t encountered any problems so far after a month of use.
I’m not a fan of frequent updates, so I plan to perform them every 2-3 months, as uptime is very important to me. That’s about it for a month; I have no complaints.
