Last Update: 2019-04-11 06:22 UTC

CentOS as a group is a community of open source contributors and users. Typical CentOS users are organisations and individuals that do not need strong commercial support in order to achieve successful operation. CentOS is 100% compatible rebuild of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution requirements. CentOS is for people who need an enterprise class operating system stability without the cost of certification and support.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Since many years I installed CentOS 6 on every computer i worked with (mainly older hardware). I like the clean working desktop enviroment, no jumping blinking icons, no Gnome 3 insane popup i don´t know what happens shit. Maybe a little bit outdated, but you can compile everything you need from scratch. (Most of it). Firefox is regularly updated, also libreOffice. For me the benchmark of what a OS should be! - Very happy with it, i´am a little bit afraid what happens if the support runs out in 2020. Until then i feel very secure and comfortable doing digital work without thinking about the underlying OS or that someone is looking over my shoulder. You can check and modify almost all! - THANKS! :)

If you want enterprise class stability and security, look no further. It's quite snappy for GNOME on an older desktop PC. If you add the EPEL and nux repositories, you have access to a variety of desktop software, including multimedia codecs. In this respect, CentOS makes for a great desktop OS just like any other Linux. All of this for free - absolutely free. Real long term support. It just works. Very pleased with it. Give it a chance, you might love it!
