CentOS as a group is a community of open source contributors and users. Typical CentOS users are organisations and individuals that do not need strong commercial support in order to achieve successful operation. CentOS is 100% compatible rebuild of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution requirements. CentOS is for people who need an enterprise class operating system stability without the cost of certification and support.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Esquema de cores:green text = latest stable version, red text = versão de desenvolvimento ou beta. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

CentOS is a great choice, if you are a Red Hat admin or if you want to learn RHEL (or prepare yourself for RHCSA / RHCE), but it is a good desktop too.
- Installation: Very straightforward and many options to choose from.
- Configuration: You need at least some basic skills to play around with the command line to get the most out of this system. If you are a RHEL admin, there will be no surprises.
- Stability: If you know what you are doing, CentOS is very stable. The only problem I encountered with so far is with the Nvidia driver (not nouveau, but the official Geforce one). If I set vsync on ("Force Composition Pipeline" in nvidia-settings), the OS hangs at the login screen. By switching to console (CTRL+ALT+F2) and back to the GUI, the OS starts without any more issues. I did not experience any crashes though.
- Usability: If you know your desktop (KDE, Gnome, MATE, XFCE etc.), the things here are almost the same as with other distros. I mainly use my PC for learning, development and as a (mediocre) gaming rig. I know, CentOS (and RHEL) was not designed for gaming in mind - Ubuntu and other distros may be more suitable for that, but this one works for me just fine. Also there are many additional community approved repos, if you want to install VLC, (S)MPlayer or whatever you need for your entertainment.
- Gaming: I have about 20 games currently on my rig. Few Linux ones and lots of Windows ones under Wine and Steam (with Proton). Mind you, I had to build Wine from source to get my gaming going (though there is a version in EPEL) and most of those games are older ones (DX9, I did not play around with DXVK for DX10/11 support yet). For Steam games, everything runs smoothly - there are lots of Linux supported ones by default (WarThunder for example) and I was able to get many of my Steam Windows games running with Proton.
The centos liveDVD lacks mouse integration on VirtualBox. I had to install it by keyboard. The installation was successful, but after restart i got only black screen with a flashing marker ... Lags occurred often while manipulating menus of the installation GUI.
I guess the problem is not the Virtual box since it was configured with 4GB RAM (8 of the host pc) and 128MB video ram though without hardware acceleration.
