BRGV-OS

Last Update: 2026-04-08 18:06 UTC

BRGV-OS is a rolling-release Linux distribution based on Void and featuring a customised GNOME desktop with variety of unique themes. It offers out-of-the-box support for English and Romanian languages. The project aims to facilitate developers, researchers and users to transition from Windows or macOS to Linux by maintaining familiar operational habits and workflows. BRGV-OS was originally created for Banca de Resurse Genetice Vegetale (BRGV), a gene bank research institute in Suceava, Romania, and is now also available to the general public.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I have installed BGRV-OS on a Dell XPS 13 with 8G RAM and it is running very smooth and fast. During the installation I opted in for the hardening options which includes Apparmor, Audit, and hardening sysctl however, it does not include any firewall. I installed UFW myself as well and enabled it using the void linux way.

The Gnome desktop has been customized with additions of Mac like and Windows. By default, it also includes quite a few gnome extensions which I turned majority of them off and chose Dash to Dock instead of the bar so it looks more like stock gnome. I intent to keep it as I do like the fact it is based on void linux, just hope the project does not get abandoned by the developer.

First off, this is the first Void-based system I was able to install without being forced out of my comfort zone, though the installer was not Calamares or Anaconda and had little graphically-natured about it, it made sense to me.

Secondly, it was the only Void-based system that was able to mirror my HDMI screen at 1920x1080 to match my laptop - out of the box, no xandr script to write.

Thirdly, the package management system is excellent and everything I use from video and audio, photography and image, CAD and drawing - all were there just as they would be available in Debian, Fedora or Arch.

I don't know about these scientists who put this OS together in Romania but I know they have made a crackerjack system that checked every box for me and I now use it on a regular basis. It deserves a far higher ranking and more attention than it's getting and my hat is off to the developers of a remarkable OS.

By the way the laptop it's installed on is a vintage ASUS G74SX with 16GB of RAM, intel Core2 processors running at 2Ghz, an Nvidia Geforce GTX 560M with 3GB of RAM and a 2TB Crucial SSD. Hope that helps someone.
