Bodhi Linux

Last Update: 2018-06-12 03:24 UTC

Bodhi Linux is an elegant and lightweight Ubuntu-based distribution featuring Moksha, an Enlightenment-17-based desktop environment. The project takes a decidedly minimalist approach by offering modularity, high levels of customisation, and choice of themes. In addition to basic 32- and 64-bit systems, Bodhi maintains designated ISO images for Chromebooks and legacy machines. By default Bodhi has only five pre-installed applications: Midori, Terminology, PCManFM, ePhoto, and ePad. Additional software is available via AppCenter, a web-based software installation tool.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I gave this a go on an ancient eeepc 701 with 2Gb RAM, the CPU clocked back up to 900MHz and 16Gb of molasses-slow Phison SSD.
Well, it worked, and seemed reasonably snappy considering the hardware, it is very usable, I'm not a fan of Moshka, but if this was the only PC I had then I could very easily get used to it.
This certainly gives AntiX (my goto 32bit distro for limited hardware) serious competition.

Bodhi would be an excellent distro for e-recyclers to get old corporate rigs back into useful circulation.

The latest experience with Bodhi was a good one. I installed it on a IBM Thinkpad R52 with only 512MB memory in it and it worked pretty well. I'm not a huge fan of the Enlightment desktop, so Moksha wasn't my favorite either. But I've worked with it for a couple of weeks and Moksha and I became a sort of friends.

The pro's and cons? Let's see in what I experienced with Bodhi:

Pros:
- Very light and therefore very suitable for older hardware
- Looks appealing and has lots of eyecandy, while still have a small footprint
- Bodhi is easy to install, even for newbies
- Not too hard to use when you got used to the desktop environment
- Ubuntu compatible, so lots of packages are also available for Bodhi too

Cons:
- If you don't like the dark theme, you can choose for another theme. But the light theme is not as pretty and consistent as the dark theme
- The ISO is 788MB in size. On older computers there's not always an USB-port or a DVD-reader available. And it should, because 788MB doesn't fit on a regular CD-R.
- Midori (the webbrowser) isn't very stable and hangs or crashes sometimes. I got around this problem by installing Mozilla Seamonkey, which worked wonderfully! Seamonkey is also very light and usable on old hardware and has a build-in e-mailcliënt and HTML-editor.

I just ordered a roll of 800MB (90 minutes) CD-R's and try to install Bodhi that way. Let's hope that works. When Bodhi Linux got installed, I send the laptop to India to give it to a poor family, so they can use the laptop. Old, but not wasted! Thanks to (Bodhi) Linux.
