Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

This distro is definitely solid and reliable you can use this without worrying about doing any restores from snapshots. There are a few bugs but nothing you cannot work around. Overall this distro is very reliable and useful. With more work I could see this distro being a platform for enterprise level linux workstations.

Awesome, highly useable, customizable OS, that combines security with ease-of-use better than Windows or Mac. Incredible customer service - like having Bill Gates on speed dial! - and that's for the "free" side. Black Lab's nearly instant (via e-mail) customer service is the best of any company of any kind in any industry I have ever dealt with. The "10" is for the world-class customer service. The OS itself gets a 9.99999. Why? XFCE. Black Lab has the best XFCE styling in all of Linux, but at the end of the day, its still XFCE. It's fine for plain-Jane computing, where low-resource-consumption is important. XFCE's just not in the same league as Cinnamon or MATE in HDMI performance. Cinnamon's and MATE's HDMI is plug-n-play, they retain the video settings, and allows sound settings to remain sent to HDMI even when unplugged. XFCE is not intuitive to set up and doesn't retain the settings. However, Black Lab has made it easy to add a UI such as cinnamon and have xfce as a backup, using the login screen to switch desktops. After nearly 6 years of using various Linux distros, I've found Black Lab to be THE BEST REPLACEMENT WINDOWS anywhere. I was a die-hard Windows 7 user. Black Lab literally did replace Windows 7 for my business and personal computing uses. Security, ease-of-use, price, and especially customer service make Black Lab Linux a world-class product.

I have moved my entire operation to Black Lab. This is a great distro. Their commercial support is great and they are quick to respond to any issues we have had. When their staff does come on-site for us they are very helpful and dont waste time or run the clock like some other Linux vendors do. We have great rapport with the company.

Some of the pro's of the system are its very solid. Personally Im more of a fan of the XFCE desktop build as its more stable. It has a great line-up of applications and its capabilities on desktop and as a server are second to none.

Some of the cons are, blue tooth takes a lot of work to get going, it does suffer from some of the same bugs as Ubuntu LTS and Linux Mint. I have made the suggestion that the company do change their source OS to Red Hat or SUSE as RPM is a standard in the ent market and we have to convert many of our RPM packages using Alien.

Commercially a great company, we buy all our systems and software through these guys. I do think they may treat their customers with more urgency than they do those who download the free release.
