Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Yes the free download speed is bad, I got it before this restriction and I donate because it's a great audio distro. I tried many others, but I always come back to AP-Linux.

Readers should note that is very much a standard Linux, namely Arch, with the standard real time kernel available from the community repositories.

Do you actually need a real time kernel for a music server? No, probably not. It may be that if you are streaming over a heavily loaded Firefox or Chrome browser, on a heavyweight distro running Gnome or KDE, on an underpowered machine with a low speed network connection, you will have some drop outs.

But if you take even a modestly powered SFF machine, put archbang on it, and just use it for music streaming, you will have zero problems and there will be no audible difference from having a real time kernel.

Not that it is difficult to move, in archbang, to a real time kernel if you really feel the need. But no way is it necessary.

The guys behind this need to get a different attitude, make source available, and act like proper members of the Open Source Community. There is niche for a pure music server, but this is not filling it.

Readers should note this not a standard Linux. It is a real-time Linux created for one task, audiophile quality music server which it does extremely well.
