Arch Linux

Last Update: 2019-06-16 02:20 UTC

Arch Linux is an independently developed, x86_64-optimised Linux distribution targeted at competent Linux users. It uses 'pacman', its home-grown package manager, to provide updates to the latest software applications with full dependency tracking. Operating on a rolling release system, Arch can be installed from a CD image or via an FTP server. The default install provides a solid base that enables users to create a custom installation. In addition, the Arch Build System (ABS) provides a way to easily build new packages, modify the configuration of stock packages, and share these packages with other users via the Arch Linux user repository.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 15 (569), 6 months: 16 (578), 3 months: 17 (570), 4 weeks: 17 (569), 1 week: 21 (531)

Average visitor rating: 9.34/10 from 299 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

That's a distro that you actually know what you're doing with your system and if something goes wrong you are able to fix. Absolutely no long hardness. Different than you might think, everything do not break spontaneously. If you just updated a package and that one needs to update a configuration file, update it (this potentially can avoid lots of issues) and customize something if it's necessary.
Everything you need to know is already on the Arch Wiki. Almost every single thing has multiple ways to get done, from de easiest to the hardest.
All the hardness you can have is on installation and initial configuration of everything. Then, literally everything is so easy to get done and you don't need to depend to flatpak's, snap's and anything, because almost all the applications found on the arch repository is updated and not customized by default (there are exceptions because of compability/security reasons).
So... With this distro you avoid lots of problems, have everything updated, pretty stable and fast (if you configure correctly) and, in lots of cases, make the actual user like me just stop hopping to another distro for better features.
Long live, Arch Linux!

Hello all!

This is THE best distro i've ever using, everything just work if know what u do.
I started using Mint, Ubuntu, Debian and several others but i just love this ARCH :)
Just now i use i3-wm cause it is lightweight and simple when u know again what u do.

Just give it a try and enjoy!

I've been learning how to use and customize the xfce4 desktop from Debian and then were using so much slower Flatpak applications because of the very old ones from the repositories. Since i've learned a lot about Linux, I figured out it's time to learn and install Arch Linux. After some days of testing and learning, now I'm running it with xfce4 with exactly the same appearance I had on Debian and ALL the applications is from Arch Official Repositories and Arch User Repositories, with a way faster, compatible and easy operational system to use, no longer hardness.
Here's some tips:
-Uninstall applications using pacman -Rs instead of -R, in order for removing the dependencies that will not be userful from another applications;
-Create a line on /etc/fstab of every partition you have on your internal storange like it's recommended on Arch Wiki. If you need to use the HDD/SSD with this o.s. installed on another machine, maybe the fstab will be userful for booting properly. For example my ssd that have a single partition: /dev/sda1 / ext4 discard 0 1 ;
-Add your user to the group wheel and sudo (if sudo doesn't exists and you want to use sudo, create it);
-Enable the Multilib repository if you want 32 bit applications like steam;
-Compile and install an AUR package manager like yaourt if you want an application that isn't on official repository;
-Install the xorg (metapackage) and xterm in order to run some applications (even some games on steam require that).
Long live, Arch Linux. Because of you, I guess I'll never hop to another distro again.
