Arch Linux

Last Update: 2019-12-15 02:20 UTC

Arch Linux is an independently developed, x86_64-optimised Linux distribution targeted at competent Linux users. It uses 'pacman', its home-grown package manager, to provide updates to the latest software applications with full dependency tracking. Operating on a rolling release system, Arch can be installed from a CD image or via an FTP server. The default install provides a solid base that enables users to create a custom installation. In addition, the Arch Build System (ABS) provides a way to easily build new packages, modify the configuration of stock packages, and share these packages with other users via the Arch Linux user repository.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I am a distro-hopper for 2 years. This is maybe my 5th arch installation, it was my hobby that hopping another distro. However I decided to stick with Arch Linux. Because I though it is the strongest. I like my packages being up to date.
I like reading wiki documents. I like doing things manually. I like text editors other than IDE's. I like keep things simple.
AUR is so good. I think all live iso packages should be included in base, such as wifi tools, netctl, dialog, wpa_supplicant for not make a shock the user who is succeed all steps of installation process ( I know in archwiki there is a warning about it.)
Thank you so much to community of Arch.

Been using Arch for over a year as an everyday OS and a half year in my job where I exchanged Ubuntu 18.04 to Arch. And what can I say about it? I haven't looked back even once.

As a Software Engineer, any compilation issues or setting up development environment, can easily be managed by Arch package manager Pacman or AUR repositories, which I cannot say the same about Ubuntu package manager.

Also, Arch taught me a LOT about Linux and it helped me to discover such a cool community of Linux users.

I've been using Linux distros of all kinds, maybe 7 or 8 years, and I've always had Arch in the back of my mind. I recently installed it on a laptop a couple of months ago.. an ultrabook-type laptop with no ethernet. I decided to use UEFI and encryption.. so I was jumping in the deep end. I admit, it took a few tries since recently there has been a change, and you should be sure to add linux (and others) to pacstrap when installing.. since the kernel and user utilities are no longer included in base. Your pacstrap will need to have everything for your setup if you're going for encryption, as it saves a LOT of hassle.

It's now my new favorite. Runs like a champ, most responsive and so far stable distro I ever used. I gave it a 10 because it does what it is intended perfectly. This is THE way to build your OS around a well maintained rolling distro, with a great community and mountains of online help. I think if it came with a DE or anything else, it would certainly be a lower score, no matter what, since you will be centering on something many are guaranteed not to like. It's a core, and a damn good one. I'm installing it on my daily driver later today, as I've been using the Arch laptop for a while now and it looks, feels and responds far, far better than Windows 10. Going back to Win10 even for short visits is kind of depressing now, since I've experienced the best.

Most will say "not for beginners.." And this may be true for most, but if you're the type that doesn't just want to try a new OS, but to learn about Linux, Arch is by far the best damn teacher you'll ever get. The experience will give you the best understanding in the shortest time, out of any and all other "pre-built" distros. You only need to watch some Youtube vids, read some of the manuals, install it on a VM a few times, and when you're ready, put it on metal. Once you do, you'll never go back.
